Senate Defeats Arctic Drilling
MSNBC ^ | 4/18/02 | DoveTurnedHawk

Proponents of drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to shut off Senate debate on the proposal Thursday, thereby losing the chance to vote on it. A House-Senate conference committee will need to reconcile the House-passed energy bill — which would allow drilling in the refuge — with any energy bill the Senate passes, giving proponents of Arctic drilling another opportunity to reach their goal.

So that means that it would pass in terms of votes for the bill, but it won't become law because Daschle won't let a majority of our representatives get a bill through the senate because a minority of senators don't want it law?

Isn't that the way the story should be reported?

So that means that it would pass in terms of votes for the bill,

It says 14 votes shy. 60-14=46. 5 votes shy of majority.

They actually fell 14 votes short of 60, so there were 46 senators in favor of opening ANWR to drilling and 54 opposed. I think there were 5 crossover democrats and 8 crossover republicans. DTH

Not even all the Pubbie senators voted for this -- RINO's joined with the RATs to defeat our extracting our own energy. Instead, we become more dependent each day on importing it from others. If, for some reason (say in reaction to some future action by us in the middle east), Venezuela's communist president decided to cut off oil shipments to the US, we would be in a world of hurt, especially if middle east supplies are threatened. Boo to all senators who don't put our country's energy needs first.

That's the way I look at it. At this point, the GOP can blame the Democrats for any dramatic increases in the price of gasoline, or any shortages that might develop in the Middle East due to our actions against Iraq.

That won't be particularly accurate, but it will sell nicely to the American public, who will want to believe it and blame someone.

I'm having a hard time w/ the math. If the vote was 14 short of 60, that would mean that only 46 Senators wanted to cut off debate, ie vote for drilling. 46 being less tahn 50 would mean that the drilling bill could be defeated on a straight up vote.

What am I missing? Was not everyone there? Did some Sens not showup?

Actaully 14 votes shy.. that means the majority didn't want it to pass and that some republicans actually didn't want drilling either.

I knew McCain would be one of those voting No. If I'm not mistaken, there was a story about how he would make a great Democratic candidate for President.

I don't think doubt whose side he's on and it ain't ours.(conservative)

Time for another executive order. If it's good for the demnazis, it's good for us.
