Lopes second manager to be fired this season

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- A slow start to the new baseball season has cost Davey Lopes his job as manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, according to a team source.

He's the second big league skipper to get axed during the first month of the current campaign. Coincidentally enough, Detroit's Phil Garner was the first. It was Lopes who replaced Garner on the Brewers bench after Garner was let go by Milwaukee.

The Brewers are riding a three-game losing streak into Thursday's contest against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals. Their 3-12 start is the worst in franchise history.

A team source reports Lopes will be replaced by either pitching coach Dave Stewart or bench coach Jerry Royster.

The team has called a 2 p.m. ET news conference to announce the firing. More information is upcoming.

I still think the fact that the Brewers won't open or close the roof while there are people in Miller Park is a bigger story.

So, who'll replace Lopes? Dave Stewart? Robin Yount?

I agree that something had to be done. It's always debatable whether the manager is at fault, but it's almost always the manager who takes the fall.

I still think that there's a whole lot they're not telling us about how badly the roof is broken, and this is a MUCH bigger story.

Doesn't the timing of this seem awfully coincidental? Even though a change was probably needed, could be they've fired Lopes at this particular time to draw attention AWAY from the roof...buy some time to either rectify the problem, or formulate a "spin" campaign...while the media concentrates on a Lopes replacement. Just a conspiracy theory :^)

Two managers FIRED this year - both happen to be the last two managers of my beloved Brewcrew. Coincidence? What's the common thread? Can you spell O-W-N-E-R-S-H-I-P? Wendy is following in her father's footsteps - he's taking baseball down the $#!++er, she's taking the Brewers down the $#!++er.

Trebelhorn's still around. And he's young enough to stick around for a while.

Typical Wisconsin sports ownership. I have nothing but bad things to say about the Seligs (and Herb Kohl).

Of course, this doesn't change my suddenly-optimistic prediction for the Brewers this year; 54-108.
