As you can see above, we here at the Canteen have Veterans, those serving now and those that have come to the Canteen to support our troops and thank our veterans. Please Join us in our USO Dance. Have a wonderful time.
Bing Crosby
The world is at war...Jitterbug, Rosie the Riveter, the Andrews Sisters, Dance Marathons, Ration Coupons, Betty Grable, Frank Swoonatra"...the list goes on and on. These images instantly take you back to a more innocent time, when Big Band music ruled the airwaves...and hearts.
So let us take you back--or introduce you--to these songs filled with bittersweet and melancholy lyrics and swing tunes that set your toes tapping and your spirits soaring.
We interrupt our regularly scheduled USO Canteen thread for this
Special Event USO Canteen FReeper Style Thread.
USO Canteen Freeper Style Spring Dance April 13, 2002 |
The Men and Women of our Armed Forces are currently rotating in and out of harm's way on a daily basis. The USO has been providing a touch of home for these brave Men and Women for close to 60 years where ever they were. We here at FreeRepublic.com are trying to do the same in Cyberspace through our Canteen. One of the ways the USO strove to provide that "touch of home" was by hosting Dances for those in the Armed Forces. A Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine could stop in and dance with a Lady, and in his mind be back home with his arms around his girl. For those precious few minutes there was no war to face, no homesickness, no sadness, no pain of friends lost or killed. Only soft music, sweet perfume, and thoughts of home. At the Dances the women would have a Dance Card to keep as a momento. A simple list of the songs played, with the names of men she just met scribbled next to the song they danced to. Memories of a lifetime captured on a little card. Today, The USO Canteen FReeper Style is hosting our own Dance in Cyberspace. So, check your hat and coat by the door, jump right in to any of our 4 Dance Halls, and stop by the Dining Room for a bite to eat. Each room has it's own Dance Card and Theme. Good food, great conversation, and good times are waiting for you.

A message for all members of The Armed Forces, both present and past: When you first look at this thread, it may seen like we are celebrating. Well, we are. We are celebrating YOU. We are celebrating how proud we are of you and how you stand for our values all over the world. We are celebrating the gratitude we feel every day that you protect our Freedom. Freedom that was bought and paid for in the blood of those who went before you. We celebrate your bravery in battle. We celebrate your compassion towards innocents. We celebrate your dedication to a job that demands your being far from family and friends. Come on in! You are our Guest of Honor. We are celebrating . . . YOU.

Personal Note:
I would like to thank Billie and Snow Bunny, the Canteen Tag-Team Hostesses, for allowing me to invade their turf and write the thread today. The dedication and effort they put into the Canteen threads every day is incredible. I know what I went through to come up with just one thread.
Ladies, what can I say, other than . . .
May I have this dance?

Couldn't sleep last night in anticipation of The Dance!
All of you who worked so hard on this have surely exceeded our expectations!!
This is so very special a presentation!
Four Dance Rooms? WOW!
Since I was 7 1/2 when Pearl Harbor happened, and had two older sisters, I was into every detail of the time - kept scrapbooks of pictures of the stars and singers, etc....my mother played all the songs on the piano and we would sing them.
Snow Bunny - I even went with my sister downtown in Miami to see Jerry Colonna -
Bob Hope's sidekick - perform at the Olympia Theater!
When I was in the Marine Corps, I went to USO's and never lacked for a dance partner..:)))
I also led an eight-woman Silent Drill Team, and we performed at the USO's in Charleston and Savannah....such wonderful memories, since it was at the height of the Korean Conflict.
Thank you, one and all, for your hard work and the end product - it is magnificent!

What a wonderful thread this morning. The music and the dancing is so relaxing. It was an exhausting night at the Fresno Rally and the Canteen is a wonderful place to gather with freedom loving patriots.
God Bless our Military, our Veterans and God Bless America. Our military, past and present have given so much so we can continue enjoying our freedoms.
God Bless America!

Forgive me for using a major ping list, but there are many I wanted to address, and this is so much quicker. :)
Now, first I wanted to know if we are going to be "presented* when we arrive, or do we just come right in? I'm sorry I wasn't ready when you called, Wolfie, but it took more time getting into this dress than I thought. It's sort of what I call my "knock-kneed" dress, because I can't move except from the knees down. :)
Where's T Man? I'm sure I saw his Edsel parked out front, so I know he's here.
Louie, since you left without me, I found a few friends to bring along......

Hi Everyone, tomorrow if you're still in the mood for dancing and want to hear some "special" music, perhaps you would like to tune into
WQXRPlease see posts #208 and #209 here for further info.
In case you don't know, Monaco has been holding an American Special Forces veteran and family man hostage for 861 days.
Tomorrow, Sunday April 14 at 11 AM Eastern time, according to www.monaco-tourism.com ,WQXR will be broadcasting a live radio show from Monaco and giving away free trips to Monaco. Wouldn't it be great if a FReeper could win a trip and then tell the Media about the "royal treatment" Monaco has given/is giving American Green Beret veteran, husband, father of 3 young children, son and brother Ted Maher?!
MONACO: FREEING AMERICAN TED MAHER NOW ---NOW THAT WOULD BE MUSIC TO OUR EARS!
Thank you FReepers and FRiends.
(If you'd like to ping your FRiends to this post, that'd be wonderful. Many thanks. : ))
