I wonder why the cops weren't smart enough to discretely watch the equipment until the perp came to pick it up & then catch him. Sounds to me like it needed to be picked up to get the information out of it.

At this point all they have managed to accomplish is to alert the perp that they are on to him & he will pack up & try this elsewhere.

The only reason the cops ever catch a crook is because the crooks are so stupid they usually catch themselves.
