Jailed Priest Was Sued By Warren County Community
4/11/2002 12:55:58 PM
(KSDK) -- NewsChannel 5 has learned former priest James Beine, currently in jail for allegedly exposing himself to students at a St. Louis public school, was sued by a Warren County community in the early 1990s.
The Board of Trustees of Incline Village sued Beine to stop him from operating a religious or commercial operation.
Residents say they were concerned for the teens that were part of the St. John Bosco Youth Group, which met in his basement.
For the group's work in the Adopt-A-Highway program, Beine received a letter of commendation from former Governor John Ashcroft.
At the time, such letters were sent to everyone who applied for the Adopt-A-Highway program.

I was flipping through the channels last night and caught this on the 10:00 news. I'd prefer a transcript, but this website blurb is nothing compared to last night's broadcast. Ashcroft was mentioned at least four times, for sending a form letter to Beine's group. It was such a transparent smear that I'm ashamed they
weren't ashamed to do it. I'm not happy with Ashcroft (or anyone else in the Bush administration, except Rumsfeld), and Carnahan's major "yes" votes were signed into law by Bush, but she's still vulnerable for voting against Ashcroft's nomination. This media outlet has apparently been assigned the job of blunting such attacks by smearing Ashcroft in [not so] subtle ways. In fact, it was so moronish and obvious that it deserves its own FR thread.
And my apologies for not having a transcript and list of advertisers....

The suburbs are OK, but the rest of St. Louis is a block of dimwits who live in brick houses 5 feet from their neighbors. And they can't drive in the rain (or even the hint of rain). Kansas City has more character.

Kansas City has more character. But at least St. Louis residents drive in the rain. Since the flash flood in downtown some tweny years ago, Kansas City residents have been afraid to leave the house if its raining.

I'm not so sure it was a smear. Journalists go for the unusual or ironic. Boy bites dog is more unusual than dog bites dog. Fact that Ashcroft signed the stupid form letter years ago is like the FAA sending the letter with safety tips to one of the 9/11 Terrorists. Its the irony that makes the story, especially now that Ashcroft is Attorney General.
I imagine that the story seemed that much worse to you because you were sensitized to the Ashcroft name. I would bet that for the average citizen it flew over there head. If they did hear it, they will have forgotten within a week. If you think Ashcroft giving this priest a form letter years ago is going to influence Jim Talent's race, I think you are wrong.

I wish I had a transcript of last night's broadcast. It's not ironic in the least -- the form letter was sent in '91. Eleven years ago. A form letter. For cleaning up trash. My wife pointed out the Aschcroft implications without my saying anything, and she hates politics.
