Juneau A bill to ban the use of hand-held cellphones while driving got a chilly hearing Monday in a Capitol committee meeting.

None of the half-dozen people who testified before the House Judiciary Committee endorsed the measure. Instead, wireless phone providers and citizens questioned the effect of the proposed law on safety and whether the government should regulate what happens inside a vehicle.

Yep, you get yourself killed by a cellphone chatering moron, it's your own damn fault! Traffic lights are the government acting as the nanny state! Why, gubmint is the government acting as the nanny state. It's free speech, isn't it? The multinationals have a God-given right to make money out of chattering idiots. You'll have to pry my car television remote out of my dead cold hands, mister!

Adjusting the radio or CD player was the leading source of distraction, according to the study. That action affected 11.4 percent of drivers.

Ten times as many people are distracted by the radio as by a cell phone. This whole campaign against cell phones and driving is all about envy. Everyone has a radio, but only "the rich" have cell phones.

They don't enforce basic moving violations as it is. Who thinks they will enforce a cellphone ban? When there is an accident, then they cite speed, no seatbelts, drunk, whatever, but there is hardly any patrolling of the roads.

"Cellphones are bad. Babies are bad. My curmudgeonly uncle would say we ought to ban them both"

Cellphones are good, unless the twits using them are bad.

This is the government acting like the Nanny state!
This is the government acting like the Nanny state!
This is the government acting like the Nanny state!

Gotta repeat this mantra, because a lot of the things that goverment does these days is exactly this.

With the nanny state, out goes personal responsiblity and without responsiblity, why should anyone have rights? And people without rights are slaves.

How about this? If you cause an accident (irregardless of your excuse), you are liable. Simple enough, huh.

"Gee, officer, I did not see the pedestrian I hit because I was on the cell phone."
"Gee, Mrs. Crabapple, I did not bring my homework in because my dog ate it."
