CHANGI CRASH PLAN
Militant fled to Medan via Malaysia
THE Islamic militant who planned to crash a plane at Changi Airport fled Singapore for Malaysia, went to Thailand and subsequently to Medan in Indonesia.
But there is no information on where Mas Selamat Kastari and four other Jemaah Islamiah (JI) members might be now, said a Home Affairs Ministry spokesman yesterday.
She was responding to queries from The Sunday Times, following Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's revelation of the plot on Friday.
'Mas Selamat was known to have made a threat to hijack a commercial flight in the region and crash the plane at Changi Airport,' she said.
Security and aviation authorities in the region were alerted so that they could take the necessary measures.
She said Mas Selamat and the four members fled to Malaysia individually last December, following news that the Internal Security Department had nabbed 13 JI members. They later regrouped in southern Thailand.
They subsequently left Thailand for Medan via Langkawi in Malaysia. 'Their current whereabouts are not known,' she added.
