Russian media report discovery of human remains in Chechen caves

MOSCOW - Russian soldiers found human bones in cliff-side caves in southern Chechnya (news - web sites), and security officers speculated that the remains belonged to servicemen who had been captured during the 1994-96 Chechen war, Russian media reported Friday.

Ilya Shabalkin, a spokesman for the Federal Security Service, said that the captured soldiers had probably been used to perform slave labor for the rebels. The bones were sent to a military laboratory for analysis.

Some Russian media reported that the remains were of both adults and children. The reports did not indicate whether Russian officials had found any belongings or other evidence that could help establish the identity of the dead.

Russian forces on Friday continued searching for rebels in seven separate sweep operations, Russian news agencies reported. Over the past 24 hours, they arrested nine people on wanted lists and detained 26 more who were suspected of having ties with the rebels, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

In the southern Russian city of Stavropol, a 20-year-old resident of the Chechen capital Grozny was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for his part in a Grozny ambush that killed three Russian epidemiologists two years ago. Artur Bayzurkayev was responsible for watching the road used by the doctors, who were riding in a van with Red Cross insignia, ITAR-Tass said.

Because they were muslim...they need to be understood and coddeled because they are muslims...thats IF the press even reports the story here in America.

Now, if this story was about Jews using arabs as slaves and then killing them...all hell would break loose.

I'm not sure I understand where the slave part comes in.. ok if they were soliders then why woulud child's bones be there? If they were captured civilians or soliders then how could you come to the conclusion they were used as slaves.. there is no mention of it in the article just the edited title. Couldn't it just be the same that they were rape tortured and then killed?

Chechens are known for kidnapping people and keeping them as slaves. Its a part of their tradition that goes centuries back.

The Chechen terrorists are one bad bunch. A few years ago, they kidnapped a Brit team installing telephone systems in Chechenya; not for politics but for a $20 million ransom. The ransom was paid and the next day Russki police found five severed heads of the hostages planted by the roadside. Its not pretty, but its true; and it sure lessens my criticism of the Russkis for conducting a barbarous war against a bunch of barbarians.
