[history]
Bryant Gumbel said yesterday that he'll quit as host of CBS' "Early Show," leaving that network searching once again for an anchor who can haul it out of the ratings cellar, where it's been for nearly half a century.
Gumbel, 53, took the anchor chair in 1999. In announcing his departure, he said that he felt "it was time to move on and do something else with my life."

GOODBYE GUMBEL!This FR post from 1999 details some of Gumbels outrageous liberal outbursts.
Please note: Out of consideration for my fellow FReepers, I did not post the photograph of Gumbel from the original article in The Louisville Curiously Yellow Journal.

Bryant Who? Never heard of the guy!
To: upchuck
What began as a boyish cheekedness soon turned into arrogance. What a jerk.

"CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz's name has been released as a trial balloon, but there's a feeling that someone with a higher profile is needed."
Given the other possibilities, I'd be glad to see Nantz as the new anchor. He is best known for his work as a golf tournament anchor for CBS, notably at The Masters.
He is a former college roommate of golfer Freddie Couples. PGA golfers are, almost without exception, Republicans. I think that Nantz, coming from that environment, at the least is not a flaming liberal.

he felt "it was time to move on and do something else with my life." Do something else with your life? Why not try ending it?

Well, golly darn. JUST as I was warming up to him............................................................
{no, not really..................)
To: upchuck
The networks are learning that the public does not care for hearing the news from an *ssh*ll.

Given the other possibilities, I'd be glad to see Nantz as the new anchor. It will not be Nantz. Gumball will make sure that CBS replaces him with another Core Democrattm. Nantz just doesn't fit the bill.

You might well be right. On the other hand, given Gumbel's total ratings flop, and the fact that he was essentially fired, he might not have much pull left at CBS.

I don't think Gumball will try to work internally with CBS. I think he will make a lot of public statements about the lack of Core Democrattms in network news and try to get the race hustlers stirred up to make sure it happens.

Don't let the door hit you in the rear as you leave, dear Bryant.
He is the ultimate example of someone who thinks the world owes him a living.
Any word on what he's going to do next?
Maybe he could move in with Clintoon. I bet the two of them would get along famously.
