BUSH SEEKS TO REIN IN ISREAL-- BUT RIPS ARAFAT 'BETRAYAL'

WASHINGTON - President Bush yesterday declared, "Enough is enough," and launched a major U.S. push for Mideast peace - calling on Israel to pull back and blasting Yasser Arafat in his toughest terms yet.

Boldly asserting America's role as the world's sole superpower, Bush also warned Iran and Syria to "stay out," and told Arab nations that they must do more to fight terror and embrace Israel's right to exist.

Far from reining in Israel, I suspect it was Bush who suggested that Sharon remove Arafat from the equation. People have very short memories. We just went through this process in Afghanistan.

The sooner Arafat is removed from power, the more likelihood the storm clouds will break over the Middle East. I suspect after an encounter with the man, Secretary Powell will come to the same conclusion.

IT'S TIME FOR HIM TO GO!!!

Yeah, I mean, what's Arafat going to say? I'm renouncing terror? I'm not renouncing terror? Either way, it's the end of the road for Arafat. I assume that Team Bush had this figured out months ago when they laid out the game plan. After all, nothing that has transpired since 9/11 has been exactly unpredictable.

"As Israel steps back, responsible Palestinian leaders and Israel's Arab neighbors must step forward and show the world that they are truly on the side of peace. The choice and the burden will be theirs," Bush said.

This sounds as if Arrat is being taken out of the equation. Ararat has lied to and deceived GW once too many times.

One thing is predictable, it is that Bush is re-slapping identifying labels on both sides. That can only backfire into all out war in the region. Terror, as opposed to war, at the bottom, is about identity, not about jurisprudence. The wars resulting from terror become inevitable of course. Insisting on identifying each side is exacerbating the situation. He does it right when he blames the identity through terror, but he does it wrong when he recognizes a Palestinian and an Israeli identity, instead of recognizing the need for a jurisprudence in the region transcending identity and cults of the respective autonomous regions. AFter all, it does not matter where Palestinians and Israelies settle in the region, it is where they are registered to designate their own leaders that is important. Demographics should not influence jurisdiction and the identities of a Jewish substate and a Palestinian sub-state. However those identities should have no sway over the confederation itself.

Whosoever can transcend these identities will own both Israel and Palestine. As for those hoping the law of the jungle will give them survival of the fittest advantage in the region, mankind is hardly fit to survive in a jungle. In fact the Israeli liberal democracy is most capable and most present in the region to carry on the necessary conditions for an Isralo-Palestinian confederation. However people keep ignoring this capability of Israel - made of an army of jews, bedoins, Druzes and arabs. Slapping on labels like Jews, Palestinians and Israelies is hardly helping either. Not that Israel is perfect and its body politics would respect a confederation transcending their various cults and classes, but at least they are the ones in the best position to carry it all on. Blaming them for mishaps is attacking their contract building work, and it is not helping the contract building and peace building necessary for the region.

One last thing, compassionate conservatism is a nutty doctrine and definition to carry out something that transcends any of this political nonsense. Bush better give it up.

I wrote the following as a reply on another thread:

Anyone who thinks President Bush embarked on this course of action on-the-fly, or was caving willy-nilly to media pressure, I've got a bridge to sell you. In fact, Israeli officials likely kept the White House in-the-loop all along, but have decided to wrap-up the mission, its primary objectives having been met.

The notion that Bush would risk U.S. prestige to have Israel snub his appeal to withdraw is ludicrous on its face. Yesterday's Rose Garden statement was likely the culmination of heavy U.S.-Israeli advance planning. You'll notice the tell-tale absense of any timetable for Israel's departure.

In Mideast diplomacy, finesse is the coin of the realm, so a good deal of tactical subterfuge is essential.

Contrary to claims by enemies of Israel, it was never Sharon's intention to stay in the "territories". Public statements by senior Israeli officials made that abundantly clear. The mission was never meant as open-ended, but rather a short-term (2-week) incursion with very specific, clearly defined military goals.

One thing's clear: Both in its swiftness and execution, the impressive success of Operation Defensive Shield sent a jolting message to enemies of Israel -- particularly those in the "territories". It convincingly demonstrated that, notwithstanding months of suicide bombings, Israel's resolve remains as firm as ever. If the terrorists banked on breaking Israeli morale, they badly miscalculated. The wanton killing of innocent civilians only strengthened Israel's resolve.

Operation Defensive Shield was 'blowback' -- Israeli style. It reaffirmed Israel's determination to survive; but more than survive, to defeat -- and defeat decisively -- those who would threaten her, or attempt to drive her from the region.

That said, Israel would still need a face-saving way to pull out, and that's where yesterday's Rose Garden announcement comes in.

Regarding that speech, it wasn't exactly what I would call a glowing portrait of Yasser Arafat. Far from it: It was a searing indictment. The President placed the onus for peace where it rightly belongs -- squarely on Arafat's shoulders. In so doing, he vindicated Sharon and blamed Arafat -- not Israel -- for the deterioration. He reiterated Israel's case for moving against the terrorists, and put his imprimatur on her military campaign.

"At Oslo and elsewhere, Chairman Arafat renounced terror as an instrument of his cause", said the President yesterday, "and he agreed to control it. He's not done so. The situation in which he [Arafat] finds himself today is largely of his own making. He has missed his opportunities and thereby betrayed the hopes of his people."

Not quite what Arafat and his minions wanted to hear. "Cabinet Minister" Saeb Erekat blasted Bush, denouncing his criticism as "unjustified and unacceptable", even as the Palestinian Authority issued a statement ostensibly embracing the U.S. initiative "unconditionally".

The President, in that 20-minute address, made another thing clear: Suicide bombers aren't "martyrs", they are murderers. This is homocide, not legitimate political activism. He condemned governments like Iraq for inciting it. In Iraq's case, for soliciting it through its system of payments to families whose children engage in it.

The President put Syria and Iran on notice: "Those who would try to use the current crisis as an opportunity to widen the conflict: Stay out".

While the President said he doesn't harbor any illusions, it's clear where blame will fall in the event of failure: On Arafat and his terrorist allies.

Moreover, among the damning evidence collected by the IDF during its sweep of the West Bank are truckloads of documents implicating Arafat personally of complicity in terrorism, despite strong public denials.

Gee, any wonder why those suicide bombings have ceased since Israel's incursion?

In short, for the U.S., this is a diplomatic/political no-brainer; For Israel, it's a win-win.

So, in one swift-fell-swoop, Bush gives Sharon a face-saving way out (and enough time to finish the job: Sec. Powell won't get there till the middle of next week), out-maneuvers the E.U., defuses yet another issue -- all the while maintaining America's pre-eminent role as honest-broker in the region.

Yet another masterful chess move by the master himself.

Anyway, that's...

My two cents...

Guys, I dont know if all the people on this forum can see this message, but I will say this to people who will read it: THANK YOU. I am Israeli, a reservist in Air Force, and I am amased at the overwhelming support that people on this forum display for my country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. USA is a wonderful country, the only true friend and ally Israel has, and it warms my heart to see all the fine people here that show support to our troops, that as of this moment fight the very murderers that killed our women and children on the streets of our cities. Perhaps, with US aid, and after our forces clear the last hideout of terrorists in West Bank, a new leadership will emerge among arabs, that does not seek to destroy us but to coexist peacefully. I dont know whether it will ever happen, but I do know, that we are brothers, and that we can count on you in time of need, as well as you can count on our support in your war on Al-Qaeda murderers. My heart bled and cried for justice when I saw the events of 9.11 on CNN. A year before that terrible tragedy I was standing on the roof of one of the Twins, observing the magestic view of New-York during my trip to USA, to visit my wife's family. The thought that this beautiful city is now scarred by animals in human form made me furious. May your troops have the upper hand in this war, and may they safely return home as victors. USA RULES. From Haifa, with best regards and warm wishes. Shalom! Hamash.

Shalom, Hamash. All I know is that I read in my Bible that countries which attack and assault God's chosen people are countries which incur His wrath.

He didn't say to do it NOW, did he? He said he hopes they can begin to withdraw. Big difference.
