Israel troops hit security chief HQ - Palestinians

RAMALLAH, West Bank, April 2 (Reuters) - The Israeli army early on Tuesday were trying to storm the headquarters of Jibril Rajoub, the top Palestinian security official in the West Bank, he told Reuters by telephone. Rajoub, the Palestinian Preventive Security chief in the territory, said 400 Palestinians were hiding in his offices. The Israeli army had no immediate comment. Israeli military sources had said Rajoub was sheltering in his compound about 50 top-level Palestinian militants wanted for masterminding suicide bombings and other attacks against Israel. Rajoub denied sheltering militants. He said Palestinian officials and women employees had sought refuge in his headquarters from an Israeli military incursion into the West Bank. He said they would not "surrender" and that if Israeli forces entered the compound "there would be a massacre". Israeli tanks and troops ringed Rajoub's headquarters in the town of Beitunia on Friday when they swept into nearby Ramallah and smashed into Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's compound in what the army called a hunt for "terrorists". Hmm...whom do I believe? Do I believe that Israel is trying to capture Palestinian militants being protected by the chief of their security forces in order to stop future suicide bombings, or that Israel is so craven it is expending men and ammunition trying to murder government workers?
