and they clearly enjoy their work

I pretty much guarantee that they understand that they need to do their job, but they do not "enjoy" doing it. Anyone who has been in combat will tell you the same. (All wannabes will tell you that they love combat - the hallmark statement of a neverbeenthere).

Some soldiers, especially the elite units, always seem to be itching to go to war.

Some of the vets here on FR say they'd love to get back into combat (SOME, not all).

But I WOULD join this fight. In a heartbeat. Not for the fun, for the just cause.

Don't go betting your home on that. Ever heard of a "adreneline junkie"?

There is a difference between taking pride in your work and actually "enjoying it". We did have some cats that went over the edge and did begin enjoying "combat". And we needed to get them out quickly, as they more than not took unnecessary risks, which in turn put the rest of us doing our "professional" best at risk.

The less "emotion" of any type one had the better off we were. But to fight in combat without emotion is damned near impossible.

The really spooky guys were the ones that when you looked into their eyes you only saw a bottomless pit. Unfortunately some of them came home and for years, sometimes forever, never again found their souls.

No you are correct, combat is not something to find enjoyment from and damn few pros do, and yet the real pro's are ready, by virture of their training, to answer the call, whenever it comes.

May God Bless those who answer the clarion call without hesitation ... America's Finest!
