Hip-hop group OutKast will play Columbia's 3 Rivers Music Festival in April - and rumors to the contrary just aren't true.
Organizers of the music festival have received a flood of calls from fans since Monday morning, when a WVOC radio announcer reported the group would not perform at 3 Rivers.
But Mark Lowell, WVOC 560 AM news director, said he was responding to a rumor, too.
"What I said was that there were rumors, words floating around that they weren't coming," he said.
Earlier this month, OutKast and soul singer Al Green had been asked by the state conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to cancel their 3 Rivers performances.
The national NAACP declared economic sanctions against S.C. tourism in January 1999, asking entertainers, athletes, families and business groups to avoid coming here until the Confederate flag is removed from State House grounds.
Al Green said he still would perform. OutKast hasn't canceled its performance, either.
The state NAACP did not return phone calls Wednesday.
Festival organizers confirmed OutKast's showtime - 10:15 p.m. April 6 - and said they had a signed contract in hand.
"Our festival headquarters has been receiving a large number of calls from excited fans and media representatives from all around and outside the state who want to come see OutKast," festival chairman Fred Monk said.
Lowell, who has apologized for his remarks, said he made the announcement after meeting with a group of church youth workers planning a fund-raiser to coincide with the festival.
The buzz at that meeting led to his report.
"The discussion Sunday night was that OutKast was not coming," he said. "But nobody said where they got that information from. I thought there was enough fire behind it that I just mentioned that there were rumors."
Candy Collier Harrison, spokeswoman for WHXT 103.9 FM, a radio station sponsoring the performance, said OutKast fans shouldn't worry.
"We've been in constant contact with them because we're planning activities around the festival and the group that weekend," she said.
The only people who are keeping the boycott are the NAACP's hired agitaters.
Has anyone heard anything about Condon's suit against the NAACP and this white group EURO? Last we saw, he filed it, but that was it. Love to see the headlines and pictures if they are escorted out of South Carolina!
gee, please don't throw me in the briar patch!"
"Jackson talks about himself at these meetings. Once he told of his days as a waiter at the Jack Tar Hotel in his home town of Greenville, SC. Just before leaving the kitchen he would spit into the food of white patrons he hated and then smilingly serve it to them. He did this, he said, "because it gave me psychological gratification."--Life Magazine Jesse Jackson story of November 21, 1969
