Unionists outrage local Muslims
Unionist councillors in County Antrim have outraged local Muslims by refusing to accept an Islamic gift which had been presented to an SDLP member.
One Democratic Unionist Party member of Ballymena council said he was suspicious of Muslims because of the 11 September terrorist attacks in the United States. The gift at the centre of the row is a brass plate, decorated with Islamic designs intended to express friendship with the people of the town.
It was presented to SDLP councillor Declan O'Loan at an exhibition in the town's museum.
He wanted to pass it to to council at the next committee meeting.
But three DUP councillors made clear their opposition. One of them, James Alexander, said: "I do not believe in the Islamic faith or their traditions and I am suspicious because of the attacks on New York and Washington over six months ago.
"A lot of people in the United States and elsewhere have been slaughtered by them."
Members of the Northern Ireland Muslim community are outraged by the remarks.
The president of the Islamic Centre, Jamal Jweida, said: "This is really shocking to us. It is the first time we have heard something like that from a politician or a public figure.

Declan O'Loan said it was the perfect opportunity for the council to recognise that there was a small Islamic community in the town.
"Unfortunately, a group of DUP councillors have chosen to express their views otherwise." However, the town's DUP mayor, Tommy Nicholl, said it was "a storm in a teacup". A full meeting of the council will discuss the gift on Wednesday.
Their imams make much worse comments/speeches.
Those terror-spouting mosques and meeting places wuldn't last long. One thing I would like your support on, Brooklyn: I would like these mosques in your city and mine, to furnish tapes of their sermons to the FBI. As any American is free to walk into a church or synagogue to attend the service, I would like the Muslims to reciprocate. I'll tape it myself.
When these "Muslim Clerics," preach in their native tongues, they urge their congregations to commit the most bloodcurdling acts imaginable. When they speak at the local interfaith prayer breakfast, why, they are sweetness and light.
Let's get on this.
You see, scouse, this is very very shocking to us because we true Muslims have nothing to do with the outrageous murders, mutilations, enslavements, and terror caused by just a few dissidents who, in the words of the American President, have "HighJacked," our religion of Peace.
These dissident, incorrect people, a scant 3 or 400 Million at the very most, are tribal people, not true Muslims at all, who operate exclusively in remote places. (Africa, Europe, North America, South America, The Phillipines, Indonesia, Macedonia, Brooklyn, Toledo, London, etc.) They pose absolutely no danger to those who will accept the Surrender to His Will demanded by Allah of all on Earth, as explained by Mohammed (May Peace be upon Him,) in our Holy Books.

I have just returned from MD,where the Southern Maryland Islamic Center in Prince Frederick sits on the southbound lanes of MD rte. 4.It has been there ever since I can remember,even before Calvert County lost its rural charm and became a strip mall suburb.
No American flag,no sign preaching Peace or solidarity against Terrorism.
But there was a Calvert County Deputy parked in front.A little further down the road while getting gas,I asked about the deputy."The muslims who worship there fear vandalism in the wake of 9/11"the clerk said.
Now,I have lived in that area on an off since 1993,and am hard pressed to remember one lone Muslim much less enough to build the facility.Also in Calvert,the majority of people are commercial fisherman and farmers who,IMHO,wouldnt judge a congregation by what their brethren overseas do.One thing about Calvert Co that I noticed right off was that Black and White folks have lived together there for decades.
I believe the lack of Muslims in Calvert should be investigated based on the Islamic center that never seems to have any cars parked in front of it except for police cars.That and the fact that it occupys some of the primest Calvert County real estate.I would really like to know where all of the Calvert county mulim worshipers are,because Ive never seen them.And when they DO meet,have someone listening in.
