SACRAMENTO - With obesity increasingly becoming a problem for California's schoolchildren, one state lawmaker is proposing a tax on soda to discourage consumption and pay for programs intended to guide kids to healthier living.

Sen. Deborah Ortiz, D-Sacramento, said her legislation will help highlight the growing trouble children have controlling their weight while at the same time offering schools an incentive to drop lucrative contracts to sell certain brands of soda on their campuses.

Why not just tax the gas emitted by Democrat lawmakers and balance the budget for good?

Please BUMP or PING if you agree. I would like for this woman to hear from people of a different persuasion who don't want legislators worrying about what to tell schools they CAN and CANNOT do when California has an energy crisis, budget crisis, water crisis, education crisis and values crisis.

As a parent, I'd be just as happy if the schools didn't sell soft drinks, but this woman is way off base.

.

Agreed! But parents, schools, PTA's etc... should set those criteria and have the community whose children go to school decide. Do Democrats feel so power hungry that after cigarettes they now must tax soda?

Someone call RUSH on this one - he predicted pretty much this point when he pointed out first cigarettes, then cigars, and eventually JUNK FOOD - HE WAS RIGHT!

At our local High School, the soda machines are inaccessible during the school day and are only working after hours......for sporting events, etc.

First they came after cigarettes, but I didn't smoke so I didn't care.
Next they came after guns, but I didn't hunt so I didn't care.
Next they came after alcohol, but I didn't drink so I didn't care.
Then they came after my Twinkies, but it was now too late, nobody cared.
