[history]
Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg touched the third-rail of environmentalism: Trash incineration.
The greenies view incinerating garbage as akin to releasing cyanide in the subway.
And, truth to tell, it wasn't all that long ago when incinerator technology was primitive - and problematic.
These days, that's no longer true.

Yeah, I remember when Eddie discussed putting in incinerators, my mother was furious! NYC has had to ship its garbage to places like West Virginia. Fresh Kills is past capacity and will not be reopened.

As a Staten Island resident, I can tell you that they'd better not try to reopen the Great Kills landfill. The people of Staten Island fought long and hard to have that toxic site closed. They'll go bonkers if the city tries to start dumping there again.

Staten Island has been the butt of jokes for some time as in "if Staten Island secedes, culturally we'll lost the dump." I hope they don't reopen it. If they do open an incinerator, there is plenty of vacant land in the South Bronx, although Sharpton would come out of the woodwork if that were proposed.
I have been reading Up in the Old Hotel, the late Joe Mitchell's collection of New Yorker essays. One of the essays was written at the time Fresh Kills was being proposed as a major dump site (previously, the main city dump was in Goatsville (Inwood) in Upper Manhattan). At the time, many Staten Islanders protested and threatened secession, although such protests were ultimatly unsuccessful. Its a shame, as much of the area was once prime clamming territory.

AND Virginia! I read an article in the Wash. Post over 6 months ago that reported on a contract signed between Virginia and New York City - where 80 trucks a day will be crossing the Wilson Bridge, coming to dump New York trash here in VA. I was outraged - couldn't seem to get anyone I know to write/call/FAX Richmond to ask how much money was going into VA coffers in order to accept New York trash.
Get ready bordering states - when our trash dumps are full, they'll be heading your way. My trash collection fees have risen 150% in the past 2 years - and I can't help wondering how much that has to do with increased dumping charges because New York has a guaranteed price!

Incinerators work, and why not capture the energy from the heat to make the plant more efficient. There is one near Glens Falls NY which is under capacity. The city could ship there.

I agree.
Here in Minneapolis there is a trash-burner for Hennepin County, and it's less than a mile outside of DOWNTOWN!!
The enviro-wacks tried to shut it down, and failed. It's exhaust scrubbers remove nearly ALL pollutants,
it generates ELECTRICITY and serves as a Steam Plant that helps heat downtown buildings.

I forgot to add:
This also allows some suburbs to have waste haulers pick up yard waste with the trash, thereby saving $$$$, by not having to run extra trucks to pick it up separately and haul it to a compost facility, which translates to lower monthly costs to me.
