Bush sooooo doesnt know what a free market is. If there was a market for US steel then US steel would not need saving!

This just might get interesting. Perhaps George W. is willing to get tough with the EU over this. Would it be so hard to freeze all shipments from Europe to the U.S. (no ships unloaded) until this tariff issue is settled?

I have a suspicion the EU sells a lot more stuff to us than we do to them. Let the tariff wars begin.

Bush wants a trade war? Thought he wanted to get rid of the recession. (sarcasm)

Don't think George W. wants a trade war. Just a level playing field, eliminating the many govt. subsidies for goods in markets where we compete. Looks to me like that's what is under way IMHO. However, I ain't no economist.

The European official who spoke about the way the union was proceeding said the list of products to be sanctioned was drafted with American domestic political impact in mind. Citrus fruit is on the list because of its importance in Florida, where the 2000 presidential vote was extremely close, the official said; steel made the list because of its importance in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and textiles because of North and South Carolina, four important battleground states in midterm elections this year.

Is the EU stupid? They picked certain industries because of it impact on "American domestic politics" but the states that they picked are not up for grab(PA, FL) or not in play(SC, NC). If the SC, NC Senate seats go Rat then something major happened. I say if they are this stupid let the trade war begin and Bush will kick their ass.

I don't think we have any interest in more wars, as such. However, we have allowed too many so-called allies to take advantage of us in trade situations. Perhaps that's coming to an end - I hope.

V, The only possible way members of the EU, and Japan can produce steel cheaper than the U.S. of A. is if the countries subsidize the energy costs of the manufacturers. The energy to produce steel {gas and oil} is MUCH cheaper in the U.S. of A. than in the EU, or Japan. Though, I understand we are seling Alaskan oil to Japan at reduces rates. Or, were anyway. Bush should sue the EU for past subsidiea of steel that brought our mills down. Peace and love, George.

Let the trade wars begin.

You took that out of context.

For too long we have allowed the EU subsidize a wide range of exports to the U.S. Perhaps George W. is going to put a halt to that practice. I say he's doing the right thing.

Nope. This is exactly the right time. Our economy is on the rebound and it's time to rid ourselves of excess baggage, IMHO.
