In 1836, Texas had only 8000 Hispanic residents, and most of those were Spanish immigrants who had entered through New Orleans and Nacogdoches, not Mexicans at all!

There were an estimated 220,000 anglo-white settlers in Texas, and it is estimated that as many as 40 to 80 thousand anglo-black slaves and servants may have accompanied them into the future State.

The native Indians, who were as numerous as they had ever been, were only perhaps 30,000 in number.

An interesting bit of Texas history. I wonder how many Texans, let alone Americans in general, know about THAT little incident. Probably very few. We're too wracked with guilt about our shabby treatment of illegal immigrants.

Some of us remember our Texas history lessons.

The mexicans paid for their slaughters ..... at San Jacinto.

I know that somewhere on FR is a post of mine that says "Remember the Alamo. Remember Goliad."
I've recalled it before, and I'm not likely to forget it.
Nor Bunker Hill, Lexington and Concord, Gettysburg, Bull Run/Manassas, Dunkirk, Dieppe, Iwo Jima, the Ardennes, Guadalcanal and many other places.
Lest we forget...

Summer! I sent Governor Bush this article with a note to him:

My Dear Governor Bush:

I am a native Texan and current Texas resident. One of
your Florida constituents and a very strong supporter of
you in your quest for re-election for governor suggested
that you might be interested in this article that I posted
on FreeRepublic.com yesterday.

Keep up the outstanding work you are doing in Florida!

Sincerely,

Richard Meek

And he replied!! This is not one of those auto-responses as
far as I can tell. Looks like Jeb himself answered this at
6 a.m. Central time this morning! Whoa! I'm impressed!
Thank you Mr. Meek!

Jeb Bush

rdf, see MeeknMing's post #88 above. Maybe he can give you some inside advice on how to get Gov. Bush's attention via email! :)

Great recommendation! Whenever we go down to San Antontio, we always have at least one meal at Mi Tierra.

My favorite is a BOWL of tortilla soup. It normally takes me at least 45 minutes to finish it off.

Ex, see NHN's #91 for a menu suggestion.

The recommended meal at Mi Tierra, by the way, is breakfast -- whether it be in the pre-noon or post-midnight hours.

You seem to have made an assumption, and not a very flattering one,
about one of your fellow citizens, that he is a racist.
Nothing in his post suggests such a thing. But you seemed to imply it,
with your reference to color. Have you ever noticed
that with the race card, as with the Silent But Deadly gas attack:

"He who smelt it, dealt it."

It takes a big person to apologise.

IS there anybody here who knows whether this is a factual account or not? I read these stories every year, and there is almost always a slightly different version of all these stories around this time. Unfortunately, I was educated in the Texas public school system, so I have no idea what really happened.

I believe Ferhenbach is the premier historian of Texas. His book reads like a novel. Makes me glad I?m a Texan.

This is a wonderful post. I never fail to watch, and to be moved, from the final scenes of "Davy Crockett". This "real" perspective is much appreciated.
