"The Cider House Rules" was my first thought, too.

I didn't see anyone mention "On The Beach". Maybe not the most liberal of all time, but one of the most depressing.
I ignored the anti-nuke message in the movie because I really liked the love story between Dwight (Gregory Peck) and Moira (Ava Gardner). I loved the scene when she is walking on the dock by the carrier.

I read a book about FDR that slammed him, a rarity, I'm sure, In the book, it is said that FDR was asked to declare a bank holiday and he refused. The author claims that that refusal was one of the major causes of the depression. Do you know the name of the book, someone borrowed it from me and of course I never got it back.
Back to movies, how about DEAD END with Humphrey Bogart, Sylvia Sydney and the Dead End Kids, although they were probaby the East Side Kids at the time.

I'm resource saving this post...there is some great thought on here...
Whenever I watch a movie, 90% of the time, I see liberal or socialistic subtelties in it...and some times I still love the movie (see Dr Strangelove)...it's part of life...being a consumer and lover of movies, you just have to compartmentalize the propaganda. Unfortunately, some cant do that, so there is danger that is not so subtle in these things we call fun, entertainment, and movies.

did you know Sulla had a large port-wine birthmark?Interesting discussion of my name sake, but badly off-topic. I do not place a lot of weight on mental or physical diagnoses of historical figures though, but we might discuss this on a Roman history thread sometime!

For those who are youngsters in this crowd: High Noon was a slap at the attempt to throw the Communists out of Hollywood in the 1950's. Wha-a-a-at? How?

The most realistic part was how he drove his stick shift automobile.........the hands control the brake and gas and the steering and the blinkers, that leaves the clutch and the gearshift......... nearly impossible, and dangerous for other motorists.

man I forgot about "Seven Days in May", that was a powerful movie and laser beamed right on to our "military as a coup in waiting".....during a time (Cold War) when we were totally dependent on our military to keep us free.
Great Find......Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster at their best and worst.

The Wizard of Oz -- don't laugh.
The original book published in 1893 had Dorothy's shoes made of silver. It was written by a William Jennings Bryan type "populist" (prairie socialist) who favored the "free coinage" of silver (a preview of ruinous inflationary monetary polices of 20th century leftists).
Incidentally, William Jennings Bryan, even though he lost the presidency 3 times, should still certainly be considered the grandfather of all that is f***** up in the modern world.
