Local Briefs: Cops, courts and crime

Police shoot man as he slits throat of girlfriend

An Atlanta police officer shot a man just as he cut his ex-girlfriend's throat with a knife late Thursday. Everyone survived the confrontation, which took place on Arlington Circle near Bankhead Highway around 11 p.m. The womanÕs ex-boyfriend broke into her house and put a knife to her throat, police said. Her four children screamed for help and someone called police. When the first officer arrived, the children, ages 8 to 12, told the officer a man was trying to kill their mother, said Sgt. Bob Creasy, an Atlanta police homicide detective. The officer found the man and woman inside the house and the man was holding a knife to her throat. He told the officer the only way he would stop is if the cops killed him, Creasy said.

The man then pressed the knife into her throat, drawing blood. That's when the officer shot the man in the cheek and the ex-boyfriend gave up. Creasy said the suspect, Steven Crews, 39, will be charged with aggravated assault. The officer, who was not immediately identified, was put on administrative leave. "There is no doubt he saved her life," Creasy said of the officer.

PAULDING COUNTY

Caseworker faces molestation charges

A Department of Family and Children Services caseworker was out on bail Wednesday after her arrest in Paulding County on charges of molesting a 13-year-old girl placed under her supervision. Amy Sanders, 23, was fired from her position and then arrested Tuesday and charged with child molestation after a DFCS investigation found she had kissed and fondled the 13-year-old on several occasions.

DFCS spokesman Andy Boisseau said Sanders had been working with the family since September. The girl's foster mother first told DFCS about the incident March 11, saying Sanders spent several nights at the house and in one case left a "passion mark" on the girl. "At one point, she was practically living with the family," Boisseau said of Sanders. "The 13-year-old told the mother that they had slept together and had consensual sex."

This county DFACS office is nothing but a waste of money.

I have personal, eyewitness, knowledge that Paulding co. DEFACS allowed a 18 year old boy, who had raped his younger sister, to come home and live in the same house with her. This is after he served 8 years in juvenile for the crime. It was that bad.

This 18 year old boy is seriously disturbed. He constantly threatens violence to his family. The mother says,"He's sick, but he's my sicko."

I have called county and state offices, but to no avail.

This is the same house that the 5 year old boy, "Rudy", found a loaded .380, and shot himmself with it.(It made the news).

Nothing has been done about that, either.
