Traditionally, blacks have had much lower suicide rates than whites, but the availability of guns may help account for the narrowing of the gap among young men, researchers said.
I guess if they didnt own a gun, they wouldnt feel suicidal.
Solid science there.
Donna Holland Barnes lost her 20-year-old son, Marc, to suicide when he drove his vehicle into a river in 1990. She later founded the National Organization of People of Color Against Suicide. "The problem with firearms is the impulsivity," said Barnes, a sociology professor at Southwest Texas State University. "Not a lot of thought goes into it."
Yeah, it takes a veritable rocket scientist to drive his car into a river.
?????..... It sounds like her son's "impulsivity" was with a car!...
It may, but it doesn't, unless guns were more available to blacks than to whites during this time span, which they weren't.
How is the availability of guns any more now than it has always been before? And if they are not more available, then why the rise in suicides?
NAACP + Brady = LIES
Government Uses Racial Gobbletygook to Obscure Suicide Among Boys
Just in case the slower among the readers might not understand your sarcasm, I'll point out that Japan has a suicide rate many times ours despite their lack of firearms.
That's true, but it's not the whole truth. In real life, suicides have a terrible effect on many people. It's not just the victim. It's his/her parents, love ones, friends. The shock and sadness and grief and anger stay with all the people who had known the victim for the rest of their lives.

The article is mostly a gun control screed aimed at the most heavily democrat constituency. The comment inferring that segregation and racism are no longer valid reasons for black angst probably got past the editor by mistake - she'll be catching hell for that.
Another blatant bit of inconsistency in the article is that "pressure to succeed" line. It was tried in the last go-round, but still failed to explain the whopping disparity between male and female suicide among blacks - the numbers for black teen girls, in the last study, was practically a statistical zero in comparisison to boys.
Something is rotten here, and it appears that it's another attempt to hide the startling suicide rates among all boys in a cloud of racism.
""The problem with firearms is the impulsivity," said Barnes, a sociology professor at Southwest Texas State University. "Not a lot of thought goes into it."
Duh! The problem with professor Barnes' statements to the press is that not a lot of thought goes into those either.
"The problem with firearms is the impulsivity," said Barnes, a sociology professor at Southwest Texas State University. "Not a lot of thought goes into it."
The problem with Ms. Barnes, is she is disconnected from logical thought. Since when is a vehicle also a gun? (The answer is when its an F-16). These two statements are contradictory. More bogus "studies" from the socialists. If one looks at the numbers there is not much statistical difference between 4% or 13%. as long as other factors are not considered. I suppose they think this is cause for more gun laws. I propose we pass a law banning the sale of firearms to blacks. That should solve the problem. Also, how about a mandatory background check for blacks before letting them buy a car?
If they can get that spin, they'll take it. But I suspect this is an attempt to load the black community decisively onto the gun control bandwagon while obscuring the sex disparity in the suicide numbers. Quite a multi-spectrum bit of propaganda.
