Caucasus: As U.S. prepares to train republic's forces in anti-terror tactics, some analysts question motives.

DUISI, Georgia -- A band of Arab fighters in the mountains near this country's Pankisi Gorge have caused sufficient alarm that the United States is preparing to spend $64 million in part to help the Georgian military get rid of them.

Philip Remler, a senior U.S. diplomat in Georgia, said in February that dozens of fighters from Afghanistan, including Al Qaeda members, had fled to the Caucasus in recent months.

Just like our spending $100 million in the Philippines to go after an estimated 100 Muslim/Marxist jungle fighters. Americans just love to be fleeced and told it's patriotic. Meanwhile the bad guys continue to get away; the Anaconda went to bed without dinner.

I'm reporting you to Bill Bennett.

Please...don't do that. He'll call Tom Ridge on me again. I hate those re-education camps.

Don't you watch nature television? Anacondas do not eat insects.

This article doesn't get it. It is about securing the pipeline. The area, not just the gorge, is a route for terrorists to Chechnya to "liberate" Chechnya and disrupt oil and gas transport there. Same for Georgia. Destabilitzation of the area is Saudi and Iranian foreign policy, using Al Qaeda and other Afghanistan trained militants. Here's an interesting paragraph form the story, speaking about a mosque there - Saudi imperialism at work:

Lordkipanidze claims that the Duisi mosque was funded by Saudi Arabian money and that the men near the mosque are Chechen Wahhabis--members of a fundamentalist Islamic movement brought here from Chechnya. Traditionally, people in Chechnya and the Pankisi Gorge have adhered to the softer Sufi tradition of Islam.

Call it Colombia east. But make sure to wrap it in patiotism so that the sheep won't see that their tax dollars are going to subsidize the multinational oil companies (who turn around and screw Americans at the pumps). Wonderful.

I don't think you get it. The premise question is WHY these pipelines haven't already been built. Why shouldn't Azerbaijan, et al. export their resources. Why must we buy our oil from Saudi Arabia, et al. In fact, Al Qaeda et al. complain about Israel, but the bulk of their operations take place in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Why's that? Saudi Arabia funds them.

Much of the terrorism IS about oil in the first place. Saudi Arabia and Iran made it so. They have successfully cut out the major competition for several years. Very profitable. The "sheep" see our reaction as American "imperialism", etc., and have no interest in understanding the hidden and express motives and policies of other countries. These "sheep" complain about our "hypocrisy" over Saudi Arabia, but do everything to challenge any policy that undermines S.A.

The training for the "antiterror" operation is transferable to Abkhazia. That's why the Russians are not happy about it. How about Russians training Mexicans in Tijuana who are rabid adherents to the reconquista ideology? How many here would support that?

The oil is not ours. It belongs to someone else. We have to pay for it. If the Saudis thought we had nice trees in the Redwoods, would they be justified in coming in and getting them?
