Sources: Swift Dropping Out Of Governor's Race

Cites Family Reasons For Leaving GOP Field To Romney

BOSTON -- Sources tell NewsCenter 5 that Acting Gov. Jane Swift has decided to drop out of the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination this fall.

Swift, a mother of three, including twin girls who were born last June, cited family reasons for her decision not to run.

Aides said she is expected to make a formal announcement later Tuesday.

Swift's decision comes on the heels of a news that Olympic chief Mitt Romney plans to formally announce his candidacy for the corner office. He returned to his hometown of Belmont, Mass., this weekend after three years organizing the 2002 Olympic Winter games in Salt Lake city.

First smart political decision she made.
Latest poll of republicans Mitt 77% - Swift 12%.

Next look for a lot of Mormon bashing from the rats.

07:27 PST (AP) -- "She's dropping out of the race," the campaign adviser said. "I don't have any reasons, I just know she's out."

Swift does not plan to resign, the adviser said.

In April, Swift became Massachusetts' first female chief executive, and, at 36, the nation's youngest, succeeding Paul Cellucci when he became ambassador to Canada.

Up until recently, she had said she was undaunted by a challenge from Romney, who has never held elected office.

Romney planned to announce his decision to run later Tuesday, after a meeting with supporters, according to a friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Good, Swift had no chance, Romney has a chance. I hear he is energizing the MA GOP. A friend is a delegate committed to Mitt.

After what he did with the Olympic-sized image problem here, it will be truly humorous to watch him run anyone stupid enough to bash him that way through the wringer. I think I better lay in a BIG supply of tomatillo salsa for this election season :)

I just hope Swift does the right thing and pardons Gerald Amirault before she leaves office, since she doesn't have to worry about re-election now.

Well if she does drop out, at least we'll know she wasn't totally STOOPID!! Now we'll have to really get to know Mitt and get behind him!!

Amen to that, except I don't think she has the grapes to actually do it.

I'll second that. And they should indict Scott Harshbarger.

They shouldn't. Aren't the Udall boys out west Mormons? They're a big democratic family, with a former Congressman and his brother, the Sec. of Interior.
