Time For Mitt To Put The Work Gloves On
Boston Herald ^ | 3/17/02 | Howie Carr

You're Mitt Romney, you're flying back to Logan tonight, after the parade in Southie, so you've already made the first good decision of the campaign.

You're passing up all the hack St. Patrick's Day roasts that so appall everyone who isn't getting Monday off to nurse their hangovers.

You're W. Mitt Romney and tomorrow in Belmont, they're going to give you a rally right out of ``Music Man,'' because there's trouble, trouble, right here in River City.

You're Mitt Romney and it's now or never, and you don't have to worry about the Democrats mounting an pre-emptive attack campaign against you.

Talk about skeletons in the closet - Shannon O'Brien is married to Enron Emmet Hayes, Tom Birmingham's bride makes $148,000 a year working for a guy named Bulger, and if Robert Reich had any more problems with the facts in his printed works, he could be a columnist for the Globe.

You're Mitt Romney, and you learned long ago at Harvard that nature abhors a vacuum, which is what acting Gov. Jane Swift's administration has become, a vacuum, a void, a black hole of nothingness.

Which is why, if you're not in the governor's race by Wednesday, Jim Rappaport will be, and that explains why he took the hit in the paper yesterday for getting behind on his child support.

The Swift gang is like al-Qaeda in Afghanistan - they're finished and they know it, but you still can't get too close because they may yet have enough Stinger missiles to bring down a helicopter or two.

You're Mitt Romney, and no, you will not be doing any one-on-one interviews with Andy Hiller or Suzy Wetlaufer.

And one word your father taught you to never, ever use: ``brainwashed.''

You're Mitt Romney, and the wiseguys are saying you've got a problem with your wife, Ann, because she has no desire to return to this rotten state to mix it up for eight months.

So what - how much time did Jody King spend in Massachusetts when Ed King was governor? Did Susan Roosevelt do a lot of meet 'n' greets? And then there's Chuck Hunt.

You're Mitt Romney, and you have no comment - absolutely none - on Chuck Hunt.

The polygamy issue cuts both ways this year.

You're Mitt Romney, and you know that if ever there was a good time to not run for political office here as a non-Catholic, this is it.

Even the very devout and tolerant Kennedy family won't have time to slur your religion this year, because they'll be too busy commuting back and forth to cousin Mike's murder trial down in Connecticut.

You're Mitt Romney, and the one thing you've got to do is convince everybody that you won't melt down in the final the way you did in the Faneuil Hall debate against Ted Kennedy in 1994.

No more Mr. Nice Guy, Mitt.

You need to call House Speaker Tom Finneran, who used to be Jane Swift's biggest booster mainly because as long as she's in the Corner Office, taking three or four months off at a stretch, he's the real governor.

You're Mitt Romney, and you know Finneran hates Birmingham, and he fears Reich, so it's either you or Shannon, and he doesn't much care which one of you it is, as long as he keeps getting his judges and clerkships.

When Tom Finneran is comparing the current logjam at the State House to the ``late '80s,'' he's not so subtly saying that Jane Swift is as bad as M. Stanley Dukakis in the final days, and as hard as it is to imagine, her poll numbers may actually be weaker than the Duke's.

Vote Swift-Guerriero - one of them isn't under investigation by the FBI. Re-elect Swift and protect your right to commit pension fraud.

There's only one person Jane Swift might be able to beat in the primary, and his name is Bernard Cardinal Law. Maybe.

She's the one who has to worry about getting 15 percent at the convention in Lowell, not you.

You're Mitt Romney, and when you're asked, you say Christy Mihos and Jordan Levy are the salt of the earth, and as for those $12 tolls, you're against 'em, and when you're governor, there won't be any more mob guys appointed to the Massport board, and Joe Malone's driver is getting the boot from the MDC, and . . .

You're Mitt Romney, and this is all you need to say.

Let's roll.

Boston is a strange place, I have had Rats offer to collect signatures for Mitt as long as they didn't have to change their party registration. A good friend is a ardent Baptist, Southern style, he claims his wife is the only Registered Republican in South Boston. Mass is truly a socalist hell hole, but it has some interesting people.

This is coming from a born and bred Utahan who claims Idaho as his home State.

Lest we forget it was The Swimmer who "crafted" legislation to allow terrorists into the U.S. He was sucking up to IRA backers in Boston at the time. The good sheeple of MA deserve this guy as they have the highest victims' quotient of any population on the planet.

The Submariners supporters supporters are dieing off, If you went FReeping with us you would get a different view of the people of Mass. Most are misguided but all they need is a push to the right, and not a very big one. They are Rats from habit not from conviction.

I hope you are right as it really hurts to have the enemy in control of an area with so many national symbols.

The Kennedy mystique is definitely eroding here in Massachusetts and the die-hard Kennedy voters who still have pictures of JFK in their living rooms are dying off. The younger crowd I run with hold the present Kennedy generation in contempt. That's why Joe Kennedy won't run for governor. Even he realizes the jig is up. Teddy is a laughingstock as much here as anybody else. He was very beatable in 2000 but the Republicans put nobody up against him. Kennedy basically ran uncontested, which was a disgrace. The Republican candidate was a nutcase nobody (Jack E. Robinson) and all you need to know about just how marginal a candidate he was was the fact that he tied for second place with a Libertarian (Carla Howell).

Like you said, the younger people around here just need a little push to the right - a reason to vote Republican. These folks generally vote Democrat because their parents voted Democrat and their parents voted Democrat and so on. The perception still lingers around here that the Democrats are "for the working class" which is a sad joke that can easily be dispelled, if only we had some real Republican candidates step up to the plate and offer some new ideas (instead of trying to pander to liberalism).

That Mitt Romney is seen as a savior around here tells you all you need to know about the sad shape of the GOP here in Massachusetts. In most other states, Romney would be middle-of-the-road RINO. Here, he is being hailed as the next Ronald Reagan, because quite frankly, he's all that is separating us from Governor Robert Reich.

There are a lot of conservatives and potential conservatives here in Massachusetts. We just need some people to vote for. But if the rest of the country keeps writing us off and the GOP doesn't make any effort to recruit, it will never happen.

Sam you hit the nail on the head, we should contest every district if only proforma, we should run conservitive slates for town and city committee's, why don't we? For the same reason that I can only 2 to 6 people on a FReep, they don't want to get off their butts and put their convictions on the line.

This may sound bitter but it isn't, from what I have seen all we need is a spark, as Doc says the Revolution is at hand.

In a way those Irish catholics in Boston are getting their just desserts with the priest sex scandals . After all their boy Teddy is one of the BIGGEST BACKERS of the HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA. Of corsue these KNEE JERK Kennedy voters are too dumb to even realize as ye sow so shall ye reap

For the babes of the world, watch out for Ted Kennedy and Chris Dobbs -- they like to make waitress sandwiches. They think it's fun and funny. For the men of the world and pages of congress, you don't want to get caught between Barney (fag) Frank and Gerry (homo) Studds. In this Commonwealth, a congressman can get away with drunkeness, killing, pedophilia, looting... just about any crime you name. Its a one party state led by misfits.

Agree or disagree: In this Irish-heavy state, esp. in the cities, the Rat problem is a direct descendant of the Know-Nothings and Brahmins.

Sorry for late reply

"With that line of thinking, you might as well just surrender the country to socialism right now. The Republicans are dooming themselves if they decide to write off entire chunks of the country as you appear willing to do. The Democrats don't give up as easily. They go into Republican strongholds all the time and give it their best shot. Sometimes they even win which is why we now have Democrats elected in such conservative bastions as Oklahoma, Texas and Nevada. In fact, both North and South Dakota voted for Bush/Cheney in 2000 and generally vote Republican in all presidential elections, but ALL FOUR senators from those two states are Democrats. Why? Because the Democrats don't have the "give up and surrender" mentality that the Republicans have thanks to folks like you."

Yes, RATS have right tactics go after national offices, it has nothing in common with Romney trying to win govrneship here. I would applaud if he will make another shot at Kennedy or run for House seat, running for governor in Mass does not make any sense in my view.
