In case you missed it, the Washington Times reported yesterday that at least 39 United Way affiliates around the country have stopped direct community funding of the Boy Scouts to protest the Scouts' ban on homosexual leaders.

"I'd estimate these decisions affected 10 [percent] to 15 percent of the average income of an affected [Boy Scouts] council, and they've totaled millions of dollars. And when it happens, we have to find other ways to raise those dollars," said Gregg Shields, spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America.

Some of the United Way groups that have cut off funds are in liberal college towns. The list includes United Way chapters in Boston, Mass; Seattle, Wash; Ann Arbor, Mich; New Haven, Conn; San Francisco, CA; Providence, R.I.; Evanston, Ill; Tucson, Ariz, and Santa Fe, N.M.

Late last month, the Four Lakes Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Madison, Wisc, walked away from at least $75,000 in community-based funding from the United Way of Dane County. The Boy Scouts decided to forgo the funding to end battles it had with the charity over its policy toward homosexuality. However, the council will be able to receive nearly $60,000 in designated donations from the United Way.

The Boys Scouts are determined to maintain their standards.

"We know not everyone agrees with our values and beliefs ... but the message is we're doing very, very well," said Mr. Shields, spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America. He said that the Boy Scouts will not be deterred by the actions taken by some United Way organizations.

"They won't stop us," Mr. Shields said. "We have a mission to help young people build lives of character."

Now, you can show your support for one of America's great institutions.

Former Boy Scouts Leader Gavin Grooms has formed Save Our Scouts to help fund Scout chapters who have their funding cut-off.

Please find out how you can help Save Our Scouts -- and help protect one of America's great organizations from the forces of political correctness.

I have a son who is 6. We couldn’t ever decide if we would let him join the Boy Scouts because we are so busy. But since all this mess has been going on, we have decided he will join the Boy Scouts, if only out of spite for liberals. Plus, I know it will be good for him.

I hate to get religious here. I try hard not to do that too much at FR on non-religious threads. But losing funding from the United Way might not be such a bad thing. It's blood money as far as I'm concerned. They do plenty of not so nice things with their money.

It's funny how things work out. Sometimes, when families or "God fearing" organizations take a loss financially, money starts magically appearing. It's my humble opinion that the Lord will provide. I have a feeling the Lord will bless this organization with money if they keep standing up for what is RIGHT!!

As a proud former Scout in the Four Lakes Council (Troops 27 and 44), I am pleased to see my old council placing principle before funding. Here in New Hampshire, I designate $10 a week to the Daniel Webster Council through my company charity drive. I told them that if the United Way got a penny of it, I would stop my donation immediately. When the United Way asked me how I wanted my name presented on their honor roll, I told them explicitly what they could do with their "Honor Roll".

If you must give to the United Way, designate your donation to specific causes. Expect that any funds not designated will end up in the hands of those who would destroy the moral fiber of our nation. And next year, donate directly to your favorite charities and avoid the United Way all together. Let THEM bleed for their principles.

As the parent of a Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm, I can attest to the public good scouting brings. I donate what I can every year to the local council.

I stopped donating to all others un-American organizations and have only contributed to The Boy Scouts of America. I just have them deduct directly $25/month off my paycheck without worrying if I forgot. Worth every peny I donated.

Go for it!Both my sons are Eagle Scouts.I quit contributing to United Way,Red Cross and the other psuedo-helpful folks a long time ago.The Salvation Army is more my style;they just get the job done without any self-righteous fanfare.I also quit buying products from Levi Strauss and others who have cut off their funding to the BSA.

I was just in your town yesterday. :)

Levi's gives money to Planned Parenthood too. We haven't bought from them in years.

God says he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. I believe the Boy Scouts will make it.

Click here for nationwide information on how to locate and support your local Boy Scout Council. Also, see if your local United Way has stopped funding the Scouts.

just curious, but what are the scouts saying about the shooting of Eagle Scout Joseph C. Schultz?

I realize that the organization would (as they should) support the institutions that this country is founded on, but I wonder...... can they support or even ignore what the F.B.I. has done?

Support the Boy Scouts directly and Don't Give a Penny to the United Way!

In fact, take what you would have given to the United Way and give it all to the Boy Scouts!!!

Thanks for the ping SB. I QUIT giving to united way a long while ago because of this and that I am such a staunch supporter of Scouting. They (united way) can kiss my Conservative a$$, cause I'm DONE with all this liberal PC BS.

You want to donate to Scouting, do it directly......bypass those leftist ba$tards

Why can't those opposed to the Boy Scouts' policy just form their own group to compete with the Scouts?
They could name it something like The Man-Boy Camping Club. Then let the market decide.

Please put me on your Scout ping list.

I was Senior Patrol Leader and later a Sea Explorer. Scouts can live without the United Way, but the United Way cannot live without the support of the millions and millions of former Scouts and their families. Screw them.

I will now send the United Way an envelope of Monopoly money to show my displeasure.

Nice one. Everyone loves truth in advertising!

And the "new and improved" Girl Scouts should change their name to "We'll Teach Your Little Girl to Become Bitter and Hate Men Club."

I was a Girl Scout. Does anybody know if the Girl Scouts' funding is also affected?

Good decision, Spookie, to get your son involved in Scouting. And you are right about God providing for those who honor Him. The Scouts are right on this issue.
