Pickering, Conservatives, and the Future
Recently the Senate Judicary Committee, chaired by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, voted against sending the nomination of Judge Charles Pickering to the floor for a vote, where it would have passed. All ten Democrats voted against Pickering, while all nine Republicans voted for him. This act should open the eyes and anger all conservatives. Judge Pickering is a long-time member of the Republican Party. He was one of the very first post-Reconstruction Republicans to win a seat to the Mississippi State Senate. He was also the chairman of the subcommittee that placed the pro-life plank into the GOP platform in 1976.
Judge Pickering was opposed by left-wing groups like NAWAR, Planned Parenthood, People for the American Way and the NAACP. These groups have attempted to "mainstream" left-wing liberal ideas for decades. It is worth noting that these groups held more clout among the Democrats on the committee than did the "well qualifed" rating from the American Bar Association, the group's highest rating.
The reason this was able the happen was because the Democratic majority in the United States Senate. The next time somebody says that there is no difference in the two political parties, remind them of Judge Pickering. Remind them that there is one less conservative pro-life judge on the Federal Court of Appeals, which is only one step below the Supreme Court. Remind them, this could have been the nomination to replace a Supreme Court Justice.
The only answer is to win back control of the United States Senate. President Bush is pro-life and has said that he will appoint Supreme Court Justices like Scalia and Thomas. To every true conservative: the 2002 midterm elections are the best chance of changing the balance of the Supreme Court. A chance like the one we now have may never come again. If we miss this chance, it may be gone with the wind, lost forever.
The Republican hold 49 seats today in the Senate. Only one more seat in the GOP column and the results of today would have been very different. Conservatives should hold nothing in reserve in attempting regain the Senate this November. Conservatives must support the best candidiate in the primaries and turn out in the general election in order for the Republicans to regain control of the Senate. We must circle the wagons and fight like all-get-out (and fire outwards instead on inwards on ourselves.)
The stakes, the future of the Grand Republic, could not be higher. The nation will never vote in a far right government in one election, sorry to disappoint many of you. As the Chinese proverb states, "the journey of a 1000 miles begins with the first step." Conservatives must begin to take these steps now. We must "mainstream" our ideas to the American public. Conservatives must begin to slide the nation to the right.
This process means winning over voters in the mushy middle and winning over fringe party voters on the right. I did not see a single Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, Natural Law Party, or Taxpayer Party member vote for Judge Pickering today. I did see nine Republicans vote for him and ten Democrats vote against him.
To Judge Pickering: thank you so much. You have helped out Conservatives in your lifetime of service more than you will ever know. It has been an honor to consider myself a fellow Conservative with the likes of you. Your service will never be forgotten and our dream will never died.
remember Charles Pickering
look forward to November 2002
Political correctness must be stopped.
We MUST not give up on this.... Keep the pressure on YOUR Senators to bring this vote to the FLOOR for a vote by the FULL senate !!!
DO NOT allow Sen. Leheay and his fellow LIBERALS on the Judiciary Committee to prevent this vote from going to the floor!!!
Advise and consent means 100 Senators not 10 !!!
