HERE’S A QUESTION for you. Who would you rather have watch over your children for a weekend: a scoutmaster or a member of the clergy? There was a day when the choice would be a toss-up. But that day is long gone. Now parents have to beware of bad men in all sorts of authority positions that were once considered to be stocked with only the purest individuals. We do not mean to impugn all men of the cloth, the vast majority of whom are honorable, wonderful people. However, the evidence of late would indicate that a boy or young man may be less likely to be the victim of sexual predation if he spent his weekends in the woods with the Boy Scouts than if he spent them in church. For that reason, we find it all the more appalling that the United Church of Christ at Dartmouth College has expelled the Hanover chapter of the Boy Scouts of America because the Boy Scouts do not allow homosexual members. It is widely known among criminologists that pedophiles seek out large concentrations of young boys. Let us be very clear. Not all homosexuals are pedophiles. Sexual attraction to members of the same sex is very different than sexual attraction to children. This notwithstanding, it is undeniable that men who molest young boys are almost all homosexuals. Therefore it is perfectly understandable that an organization whose membership is comprised entirely of males under age 18 would prohibit homosexuals from obtaining positions of authority over its members. What is less understandable is how a church that claims it “respects freedom of individual conscience” and has “no tests of faith” would suddenly set as a sort of “test of faith” the acceptance of homosexual behavior. The United Church of Christ prides itself on its diversity, tolerance of different Christian viewpoints and lack of dogma. But when that position is challenged by political correctness, guess which one wins?
