I have great respect for men (or women if there are some) who can carry 120 lbs and fight the good fight at altitude. I only wish no more of them would be casualties in the utter defeat of our enemies.

The one post/caption that has given me a genuine belly-laugh today!
Especially with the solemn 6-month rememberance of 9-11 approaching.
God Bless our guys!
Amen and amen.

The 10th Mountain Division
A fairly knowledgeable correspondent to the Hugh Hewitt Show here in Los Angeles
related how the 10th Mountain Division came to be (at least by that name).
Appparently, a number of new units were being added to the Army in the Reagan
military build up of the early 1980s.
I guess the actual naming of the new units had to get the OK of a number of officials,
including one Senator, a WWII veteran who had managed to survive near-fatal
injuries when hit by machine-gun fire in Italy.
Thus, Senator Bob Dole basically said "it's the 10th Mountain Division, or else!".
Don't know if this is urban myth, but it was at least a good story...even if I didn't
always agree with Dole's political stance.
And if anyone has a better explanation of the naming of the division...please post!

I don't want to rain on anyones parade here, but these men deserve to have desert cammo flaks...hell if they want gilley suits give it to em. Those jungle toned flaks are a disgrace on us.
To: antaresequity
At first I thought it was a little tacky to wear 2 different types of camo...but now...it's OK. It looks cool. Besides, if the enemy is close enough to see what their American opponents are wearing, they will be dead shortly.

Hi Sam
That is one of the things I look for when I see Army guys on TV, I believe it is still the rule.
To: antaresequity
The flak jackets they are wearing are so new that no desert camo has been made yet. The jackets have arleady been noted for saving lives. As fast as the company can make them they are being ahipped.

Patches get sewn on in garrison, or in the rear combat zone. Not a high priority. As a rifle company commander (Captain), I wore a jungle fatigue jacket for several months that I pulled out of the resupply bag- it had subdued Spec 4 insignia (enlisted rank) sewn on the sleeves. It didn't matter, every man in the company knew who I was; although I did get arrested in the PX at Freedom Hill in DaNang when I returned to the rear for a day and was wearing that jacket with a boonie hat sporting captain's bars.
Great pictures of life in a rifle company. If you haven't been there, you have no idea of what its like. These men are the only true warriors left in modern society.

Unfortunately not everyone has one as yet. So you see the mix.
