Other Views: Reagan might say: 'There you go again, Democrats'
Davis' machine did for Simon maybe what the Republican couldn't have done himself. But Davis should read a little history -- and watch out.
Republicans have turned their backs on a successful two-term moderate mayor of a major California city and nominated for governor an obscure right-wing candidate with no experience in government, and they have done so at the bidding of the powerful Democratic governor they want to unseat in the fall. That's 1966, not 2002.

The Dems have already covered all the women-vs.-men, aren't-we-oppressed sort of programs and issues. I wish Simon would advance some serious programs to promote the interests and well-being of women who really want to marry and raise children.

If you survey all 100,000,000 American voters well over half will tell you they are centerist or moderate. People that you would consider to be far off the scale to the left believe that they are moderate centerists.
Even those that claim to be very liberal or very conservative will tell you they are where the center ought to be. That is why the media truely believes that they are not biased. The media is in the center of where they think the center should be.
There is no way that a conservative can win in California. It is a more liberal state than it was 30 years ago. It was liberal back then. Reagan was very aware of that. Reagan won by convincing enough of the public that he was not really a conservative. If I had a dollar for everytime Reagan mentioned he was a former demorat and uion president in that first Governors race I would be rich. What Reagan said over and over was, "As a young man I was a great follower and believer in the plans and policies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. My Views have never changed. It is the Democrats whose views have changed." It was Reagans "I am an FDR Democrat at heart" pitch delivered in several forms that elected Reagan.
Those that say Reagan did what Simon is doing are lying to themselves. I invite anyone to go back and read the commercials and speeches Reagan gave in that first race. It will open your eyes.I know what Reagan did and what he said. I watched as Reagan overcame all the things that caused the Goldwater disaster in 1964.
Simon is a Goldwater. He is nothing like a Reagan. Simon is at best a Goldwater with out the vote getting ability.
You are ignoring the segment of voters who do not vote *for* someone, but vote *against* someone. New York is a much more liberal state than California -- Al Gore's margin of victory was more than twice as great (25% vs. 12%) in New York than California -- yet "conservative" George Pataki (who was running as a conservative in 1994 and had a 100% pro-life record in the state legislature) beat Mario Cuomo because a large segment of the electorate wanted to throw Cuomo out.
All you need is enough Californians hating Gray Davis and ideology is irrelevant.
Free Republic has been replete with posts from Californians who have stated that liberal co-workers, neighbors, family, etc. detest Davis and whose primary impetus in voting will be to vote against him.
The greatest problems facing California are the typical modern *regressive* politics of the Democratic Party, and having Gov. Gray Davis as the Nominee!
We need to do the Democratic Party a favor, and we need to do the People of California a favor. We need to work for restoration and reform in the Democratic Party, -
And, we still need to develop an 'exit strategy' for G.G Davis.
Will it be eight long months of hard work as we work the system to inform fellow Democrats of the important issues, and as we try to find a suitable replacement for Davis? Or, will we just wait for a single day at the polls on November 5th?
YOU Pick!

With the State of California *? $17 Billion ?* in-the-RED!
In-the-RED DAVIS, continuing to promote gray Enron Economics! - with the Davis' Budget.
* The numbers keep changing but the last number that I heard was 17 billion. I've also heard 12 billion. How can you trust a lying bunch of dems? - by dalereed - 3-7-02
