Maybe there's a Viagra commercial in Bill Jones' future. He has become, after all, California's Bob Dole. Like the longtime U.S. senator who ran for president in 1996, Jones is the decent, plain-spoken man from the heartland who dedicated his life to public service and who now is trying to take that last step up to the state's most important office.

I think this article nicely sums up the myriad problems, and also some strong points, of Jones' campaign. As of right now, Jones' website is still down for spamming. See this thread for details on that one.

Simple Answer - VOTE FOR SIMON!

A would-be Reagan is better than a would-be Dole.

FIRST, consider the Source of the Article: Sacramento Bee.   However, as I went through it quickly, it did seem ...balanced. & some things I'd been thinking/wondering about Jones.
A response from a Reagan-Democrat: ... ?? Hmmm... Regretably, you may have a point...
But then, there is counter-point.

Will Bill Simon be the conservative's "Prince Charming"? Or, will he be California's borish 'Prince Charles'?

I really liked all 3 candidates in Debate 1. And Simon was definitly a fresh face, and great/innocent presence to the political scene. (missed #2) By Debate 3, - Jones.
About two weeks ago, Simon looked 'borish' in his ads. In the last couple of days, he looks interesting in the ads, BUT, is anybody else getting really tired of seeing NY moderate RUDY's 'mug' in the Simon Ads? Come on, the Yankess lost, and I don't want to see Rudy all over California the next four years, or at the Inaguration... I've got Rudy fatique, - big time!

(On Hugh Hewitt, - Campbell said...) He is comparing Bill Simon in 2002 to Ronald Reagan in 1966 = Fresh Face to California politics. I do appreciate that as a fresh face, Simon DID choose a Conservative course/agenda!

However: - 1. Wasn't Reagan a resident of Calif. for much more than a mere 10 Years? - 2. Weren't Reagan's Calif. conservative foundation/credentials very solid? - 3. Did Reagan have to drag some NY Rockefeller type around to get people's attention?

Of course, Jones has had all these many years ... and... what?... ...nobody knows who he is, or what he stands for..? Or, maybe the informed Dem socialists (like those at the Sac Bee) know exactly what he stands for, and maybe he is the one they don't want as Governor.

JONES: Lacking charisma - Big Deal! And he did quite well during/ending Debate 3, - Happy Valentines Day..! That & other things, was good enough for me.
* who voted for the biggest tax increase in state history to help balance the budget in 1991. I don't know the details, but when the Dems push bloated budgets, they kind of get their way.

Jones Negative: (Not presenting) a coherent vision for the future. Of course, what political leader has? * Jones & McCain - oh, really? * He would stay the course with the state's new curriculum. ??

Jones Positive: * Jones has at times offered glimpses of a positive campaign, ... * pro-business but not aggressively anti-labor. * ...environment & ...coastline or its natural resources. * knows his way around the Capitol without a map. * has an eye toward the future.

Maybe he should have presented himself that way to the voters   VS. While I have G. G Davis fatigue, I also have maximum RUDY fatigue when I comes to the moderate from NY telling us who is best, and how to vote. In some ads, Simon has energy, in others... I've had enough already.

Republicans, Conservatives, (& Others) - There should be a PRE-Primary before the previous Labor Day, or by Thanksgiving, or by mid-January at the lastest. GET the "Jones vs. Simon / who is the best conservative candidate" issue SETTLED BEFORE the actual primary election!

In this primary election, I'm voting the Dem ballot. I would like to encourage Democrats to rally around the name of ** Chuck Pineda, Jr. ** for Governor!

It was he, after all, who voted for the biggest tax increase in state history to help balance the budget in 1991. Later, Jones ousted the very conservative Republican leader of the state Assembly in a coup encouraged by a governor, Pete Wilson, who was despised by Republican faithful as a turncoat. Finally, Jones, by now secretary of state and California's highest ranking Republican, deserted the 2000 presidential candidacy of George W. Bush for the maverick campaign of Sen. John McCain just before Bush sewed up the nomination.

So now we learn that not only is Jones anti-life, he is also a pro-tax McCainiac. No wonder he is so desperate he is spamming a million people. He has betrayed the core conservative supporters of the Republican Party and now he is wondering why his campaign is going nowhere fast and sinking like a ton of bricks. Its a good thing we have Simon around to kick his and Riorden's butte, because it would have a crying shame to back a McCainiac RINO against an ultraliberal RINO like Riorden

At this point, a vote for Jones is a vote for Riordan.

Bill Jones is a nice guy but he can't win for two reasons: President Bush will never campaign for him and he doesn't have the financial horsepower to take on Gray Davis. He expects like Bob Dole, to be rewarded by the party for decades of faithful service. The problem is faithful service isn't enough and even if you leave the above two reasons aside, Jones won't win enough votes to make Tuesday since he hasn't shown Republican voters how he'd beat Davis in November. Those conservatives who backed Jones will switch to Bill Simon knowing that any vote for their man will only help the RINO Dickie Pooh. Jones will be remembered as the candidate whose own limitations helped make the case for Simon.

The Sacramento Bee is trash, but Daniel Weintraub is actually a pretty fair and objective journalist. He and Dan Walters are the lone bright spots of that rag, IMHO.
