SACRAMENTO - As months of campaigning dwindle to just days, a giddiness has begun to seep into the Bill Simon camp. Supporters of the Republican candidate for governor are e-mailing each other a photograph with Simon's face superimposed on Hollywood's Clark Kent as he rips off his business shirt to reveal his Superman garb with a big ``S.''

If Simon wins the primary will the liberal wing do to him what they did to Bret Schundler in New Jersey? My days as a Republican will end the day I read that this has happened!

I was a staunch supporter of Schunder, and went from North Carolina to New Jersey to meet him. Also I did some legal work for his campaign. I think he is a terrific guy and would have done great things for New Jersey. However, I both understood and supported President Bush's decision to stay in Washington on business related to the war, and to help in the NJ and Virginia gubernatorial races only through recorded advertisements.
That was then, this is now. Bush has made it clear that he will campaign "heavily" for the winner of the Republican primary in California, which now appears to be Simon.
Simoe will start out behind Davis in the polls. But he will run like that great horse, Silky Sullivan. He will be trailing in the back stretch, then he will flex his muscles and kick it up a notch, passing Davis in the club house turn and will win going away.
With Guilani and Bush campaigning for him and with him, and with Gray-out Davis being damaged goods, Simon is an excellent bet. California will again have a Republican governor, come next January. IMHO.

Personally, I think Simon ought to go on Howard Stern's show. Lots of "unaffiliated" voters there, and Howard's all for lower taxes and getting government out of people's lives. There is much to be gained from this, and very little to lose. Heck the Brent Bozell-Bill Bennett temper tantrum might help Simon even more.

Great Graphic!

The only Republican in statewide office has traveled through the state on a ``leadership you can trust tour'' meant to tout his 20 years in state government. I'm tired of career politicians who think they have a right to be in office. They are more of the same, big government Democrat or big government Republican, always looking to government for solutions.
Bill Simon is an outsider and I welcome him! He is a principled conservative and isn't beholden to any special interests or government toadies. He has said that he will NOT look to government first for solutions.
Go Simon!

Bill Simon is "mild-mannered",-- and that's no BS.

"[Riordan's] ads focus on Simon's spotty voting record, his decision to register as an independent voter in the mid-1980s and his past business failures. "
Gee-- What are friends for?
Well let's take a look at those. First, registering as an independent almost twenty years ago is no crime. Hell, Reagan was once a DemocRat. As to Riordan... he gave $500k to the inept DemocRat Tom Bradley in his run against Governor Deukmejian at about that time. Or what about the dinner Riordan attended honoring Barbara Lee for her solitary vote against the War on Terrorism, just a month ago. You really want to talk about party disloyalty, Dickie boy?
Spotty voting record: Well, that's one of the reasons Simon's running: most major GOP candidates here have been decidedly unworth getting out of bed to vote for. Many of the folks who will vote for Simon will be voting for the first time in years. See, Simon's changing the rules by motivating the great silent majority of voters who have been disillusioned and disenfrancised by the GOP's attempts at fielding bland, socialist-lite candidates. About time. Last time that happened was 1966. And it's not the only parallel to that halcyon year in which a bright, principled, engaging outsider rode to the rescue of a state run into the ground by big-spending incompetent DemocRats.
As to business failures: hey, the man's a venture capitalist, and a good one. VCs are a sophisticated breed of gambler. They bet huge sums of high-risk capital on innovative ventures on the chance that one in ten might strike it big. This is a vital function for our capitalist economy and is fundamental to our unparalleled way of life, unmatched record of innovation, and vibrant economy (yes, even today, even in spite of crushing tax burdens, burdensome regulation, etc.) Meanwhile, the only explicit reference to a "failure" that I've seen in Riordan's ads refer to a small, failed S&L on whose board served Bill Simon's father-- not Bill Simon the candidate! Get it right, Riordanites. Besides, after Whitewater, you think anyone cares about failed S&Ls?
Get out the vote! Carpe diem, Republicans! A candidate like Bill Simon comes along once in a generation.
