Ohno is a class act.

Reuters Photo

Gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno of the USA celebrates on the awards stand at the medals ceremony for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games men's 1500m short track in Salt Lake City, February 20, 2002.

and now the sore Loser:

Reuters Photo

Kim Dong-sung of South Korea stands after throwing down his national flag in disgust when judges declared him disqualified for apparently impeding the path of American rival, Apolo Anton Ohno, in the men's 1500 m short track final at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, February 20, 2002. Kim crossed the finish line first, with Ohno right behind, but Ohno was awarded the gold when Kim was disqualified.

Short track rules, regulations

Intentionally pushing, obstructing or colliding with another racer calls for the offender's disqualification. Improperly crossing the course -- cross-tracking -- is also prohibited.

Lead skater has the right of way and the passing skater must avoid body contact.

Skaters also are disqualified for changing lanes or altering their course at the finish. Competitors are required to skate in a straight line from the end of the corner to the finish line. Veering inside or outside to maintain the lead is grounds for disqualification.

It is clear to this observer that Ohno is the best passer in the sport. Had the Korean not skated into his line Ohno would have won the race anyway. Seems this Korean team engages in alot of dubious moves hoping they dont get spotted. Ohno was very smart to throw up his arms at that moment so the ref didnt miss the rule-breaker.

I am a big fan of Michelle Kwan's but she needs to go pro after these Olympics. She has proven all that she needs to prove. I'm really hoping she doesn't stick around for the 2006 Olympics in Turin.

I wasn't dissing Oksana, I feel bad for her, to have all that talent, and yet she seems so alone and unhappy. No family to care about her. I wish her all the best in life.

Too bad about the USA women curlers...I was realy getting into the sport....maybe FR could sponsor the team.....the American "skip" is a honey, real wholesome looking...but the team needs some pizazz..sexy costumes...maybe.....the USA #1 bobsled team, Racine, the ones that lost..had the slogan, "The fastest women on ice"..for the Curlers..I'd go with..."these ladies can CURL your toes..."(g)

Wanna thank you again for all your great comments and info and all the work you've both put into the threads...it's been fun..

Can I suggest that you start a SEPARATE thread on the ;adies figure skating, about the time that NBC starts the broadcast...

Well if Debbie Thomas won the bronze in figure skating, then Flowers, who was the driver in the womens bobslead race, is not the first black woman to win a medal in the winter olympics..perhaps the media needs to clarify that she is the firs to win the gold in the winter olympics.

Michelle wants to be the 'Michael Jordon' of her sport, she can only do that by winning the Worlds next month and taking 2 golds.

That's right, I forgot about the Worlds. I meant Michelle should retire before the next Olympics and not compete there. I'd love to see her go to Worlds and win another gold medal.

Huh? What gives with all the Russian druggie posts?

What about the crack-whore, porn-star Pamela Anderson, who currently has a starring role in an American TV show, VIP?

Or what about the 5-time loser of a junkie, Robert Downey Jr., who had a starring role in Ally McBeal until his most recent drug arrest?

And Pee Wee Herman, arrested for public masturbation. Just released a movie in the US.

Come on now, at least Oksana is out of the limelight living an obscure life, unlike her counterpart American "stars".

At least Russians put a lid on their flunkees. Can you say the same?

I absolutely agree with you that Michelle Kwan, following this Olympics, needs to move on to the Pros or whatever she wishes to do in skating. With the new regulations going to be placed into effect coupled with the Pres. of the ISU preference for more athletic figure skating ( he was a speed skater) Michelle will be out gunned in the future if things for scoring go that way. Quite apart from that, however, the older Slutskya is more athletic in her skating style and would have longer staying power and the younger skaters, Cohen and Hughes will out distance her too. I like Michelle's skating and I like the others too. With all the new events coming into the Olympics, who knows, maybe there will be the artistic and athletic divisions in skating.

Word on FOX... confirming Danny Pearl's murder after police investigation... letter is from Wall Street Journal. MOre news breaking on this.

Sheesh, calm down. I've already apologized in a previous post for saying something when I didn't have all the facts. Baiul was pulled over for a DUI back in the nineties and I thought I remembered something about drugs in her system. I should never have said anything about the drugs, and didn't elaborate on that point. I am well aware that athletes and celebrities from all nations have substance abuse problems, it can come from not knowing how to handle stardom and the sudden attention and money that comes along with it. And Oksana has no support system, Victor Petrenko and her coach have been wonderful, but for a time there, she did live a lifestyle that they urged her against. And sorry, she does look weary of life in her interviews now. It is really sad to see a fresh faced young girl be so hurt by life. Oksana has been dealt a cruel hand in life. I feel for her, I really do.

Sounds great. Put a link on this thread linking it to the figure skating thread just in case MR sidebar moderator removes it from breaking news....

I am having company so I dont think I will be commenting during the event. My old girlfriend and I get together every Olympics to watch the womens figure skating. Goes back to the early 80's.

Oh no. That is so sad about Danny Pearl. His poor wife. I'll be looking for the news story. I heard this morning that it was probably a religious thing, due to his being Jewish. Yikes.

Good idea on the World's. I will do live threads for them. Athens will be very interesting. Next to no security there, very volatile situation.

I'll wager you that Athens 2004 gets cancelled because of terrorism...Greece is a sieve....no border control..lots of terrorists running around, and many violent anti-Americans....it would be a perfect place to get try and even for what we're gonna do to Al Quieda in the coming years....and who 's gonnaprovide the security liek the US is doing at these games...the EU? HAH..fuggedaboutit....

Don't apologize for stating the truth....Oxana's been a train wreck for several years..she lives in Greenwich, CT..nearby to me, and several times she's made the front pages of the tabloids....driving her Mercedes into a ditch, and other escapades....she's had more opportunities than most people ever get in teir lives, and plenty of folks tried to help her..she wouldn't take it....sometimes ya gotta hit bottom before you can get well.....look at Dwight Gooden..

I did agree with your comment this morning about rich kids not doing so well at the Winter Olympics. I do think that some always have everything handed to them, and have the idea that a medal will be handed to them as well. It seems as if those who have to train hard and somehow support themselves seem more hungry for success in a way, and thus succeed. I was just reading an article about Jean Racine, and how her drive for a gold blinded her. She had endorsement out the wazoo, and could concentrate just on training. She is coming back for the 2006 Olympics, I hope she learned a lesson.

Are you joining us for the live thread this evening for the long program? I wish the best for all the lady figure skaters and hope they all skate their best.
