Ohno is a class act.

Reuters Photo

Gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno of the USA celebrates on the awards stand at the medals ceremony for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games men's 1500m short track in Salt Lake City, February 20, 2002.

and now the sore Loser:

Reuters Photo

Kim Dong-sung of South Korea stands after throwing down his national flag in disgust when judges declared him disqualified for apparently impeding the path of American rival, Apolo Anton Ohno, in the men's 1500 m short track final at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, February 20, 2002. Kim crossed the finish line first, with Ohno right behind, but Ohno was awarded the gold when Kim was disqualified.

Short track rules, regulations

Intentionally pushing, obstructing or colliding with another racer calls for the offender's disqualification. Improperly crossing the course -- cross-tracking -- is also prohibited.

Lead skater has the right of way and the passing skater must avoid body contact.

Skaters also are disqualified for changing lanes or altering their course at the finish. Competitors are required to skate in a straight line from the end of the corner to the finish line. Veering inside or outside to maintain the lead is grounds for disqualification.

It is clear to this observer that Ohno is the best passer in the sport. Had the Korean not skated into his line Ohno would have won the race anyway. Seems this Korean team engages in alot of dubious moves hoping they dont get spotted. Ohno was very smart to throw up his arms at that moment so the ref didnt miss the rule-breaker.

Compare the way he treated his flag with our athletes' wanting to parade the WTC flag on opening day. Oh, I forgot -- we're jingoists. Never mind. </sarcasm>

what a sight the mountains are against the blue blue sky.

hi, utah girl. my son just woke me up from a nap (worked 4am - 10 today)... he got off
the school bus out front and climbed in through the doggie door... and demanded we go outside.
i'm glad he did. absolutely clear, about 50 degrees, f-16's circling the valley - awesome.
i guess that means my weekend has begun. can't wait for the skating tonight, and i'll actually be
able to watch the medals ceremony tonight (and bury the alarm clock till monday).

as if i needed to be reminded why i detest nbc... pmsnbc just cut away from US v. canada curling
to show finland v. sweden women's hockey. must be time to take the rotties and the boy
for a walk (at least until cross country coverage starts)... maybe we'll see some ufo's get chased by
the 388th's falcons. now that would be entertainment. ;-)

Apparently there is a rule, rule 292 in the ISU rule book that rules out any protest after a short track race is called! The rule was put in a few years ago, and I can't believe it was approved. The Korean deserved to DQ'd last night, but he also should be able to appeal. Personally, I think the rule should be changed.

The only protest allowed is: to advance a skater to the next round, who was taken out of the race due to a dsq.

I agree the rules should be changed, relagating Kim to 2nd place would have been a fair decision.

Bodeeeeeeeee just did his second giant slalom run and appears poised to win a medal. Possible silver. Eberharter of course aced his 2nd run and sits in firt by almost a second. The others above Bodeeeeeee after the first run have all skiied and are under him.

Bodeeeeee's second run was faster then Eberharter. Goes to show you how you can lose a gold by being conservative on your first run. Maybe Bodee freaked a bit on first run since he was the first skiier. He sure did put the pressure on Eberharter. Oh well.

Cool on Bode! Did you hear that the Russians women's team pulled out of the 4x5KM relay? One of their skiers, Larissa Lazutina, was disqualified for blood doping. And the Ukraine skiers didn't show up at the start of the relay. Russia was heavily favored to take the gold medal, everyone else was going for silver.

Yeah, and did you see Sissy Rockefeller and Bucky DuPont kicking butt in the Rich Kids Downhill Boogie Board Trashcan Lid event?

Just kidding. Some of these rich kid sports are very marginal in Olympic competition if you ask me.

BODEEEE silver...YIPPEE, I like his attitude. ALthough he skiied to conservative first run.

Lazutina already has two silver medals from the Salt Lake City Games, I wonder what will happen. Something about they dope to make up for not training in high altitude. Oh well. Shame so much cheating has to go on.

U.S. skier Bode Miller was seventh after the first run of the giant slalom, but turned in the fastest second-run time to win the silver medal.

Supposedly, Sasha has a quad that she could throw into the mix. If she landed a quad, she would be the first woman to do so, and I think she would get gold for that.

I think she was doing drugs, but nothing illegal. Maybe too much valium, or something like that. Of course, when you mix legal drugs and alcohol, it's a deadly combination.

You forgot to mention the Russian figure skating judge sneaking in the vodka under the scoring bench. And the Russian team bus driver crashing into a phone pole drunk as a skunk. And the heroin discovered in the Russian flagpole during opening ceremonies. And the Cocaine and Meth party thrown for Yagudin.

Yes, it was something like that. Now I feel bad I said something because I can't remember the details. Poor Baiul was such a mess there for awhile, I do feel for her, no family at all. And I think after she won gold, she had all that money from the endorsements and freedom to really live, and no guidance from anyone that she was willing to listen to.
