NOW Calls For Resignation of Anti-Gay Alabama Judge
February 20, 2002
"Anyone as bigoted as Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore is entirely unfit for a position on the bench," said National Organization for Women (NOW) Action Vice President Olga Vives. "Moore's anti-gay comments are appalling and warrant his immediate removal from the Alabama Supreme Court. Moore's outrageous bias underscores the need to monitor judges at all levels of the judicial system."
"NOW's judicial justice project is organizing nationwide to keep bigoted, right-wing judges like Moore from ever reaching the bench," Vives said. "George W. Bush clearly holds the power to imprint his conservative agenda on the U.S. judicial system. To date, the Bush Administration has sent over 90 nominations to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Most of these nominations are ultraconservatives just waiting for the chance to dismantle civil rights and women's rights."
Moore's remarks in a child custody case brought widespread outrage. In agreeing that the mother's same-sex relationship made her unfit for custody, Chief Justice Moore wrote, "common law designates homosexuality as an inherent evil, and if a person openly engages in such a practice, that fact alone would render him or her an unfit parent." Moore went on to say in his written concurring opinion that homosexuality is "abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature, and a violation of the laws of nature."
"Moore's comments are not only inappropriate, they're completely erroneous," Vives said. "The American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Child Welfare League of America have all found that sexual orientation does not determine parenting quality or ability. The American Academy of Pediatrics released a study this month which found that children of same-sex parents fare just as well emotionally, cognitively, socially and sexually as children of opposite-sex parents."
"NOW calls on officials at the state and federal levels take immediate action to prevent further obstruction of justice in Alabama by Moore's inability to rule without bias and demand his removal from the highest court in the state," Vives said.

Um, what women's rights are we talking about? Lesbian rights? Don't count me in sister! And I'm glad. Anyways, frankly because of THEM I have to work. I'd much rather stay at home......

We need more justices like him sitting on state SC`s, from coast to coast.

This judge should be off the bench. It would be interesting to know what other opinions he holds that would lead to people, who bring cases into his court, not getting equal treatment under the law.

I think CJ Moore showed a lot of courage making such politically incorrect statements. This "judicial activism" you speak of, I don't see. The final vote was 9-0, so Moore wasn't alone in his ruling and if I'm not mistaken, the final decision was based in common law of the state of Georgia. If this reaches the USSC, they might choose to overrule it at some point. As a conservative, I usually have a live and let live attitude, but I don't support or condone the homosexual lifestyle and the militant gay agenda. I think its immoral for two lesbians, or two gay men to raise a child.
It's best to be consistent and oppose ALL judicial activism.
I'm not an absolutist. May be I'm wrong, but you sound more like a pissed off libertarian, then a traditional conservative. The right of religious freedom is granted in the Constitution, under the Bill of Right's. I don't see anything in the Constitution that supports homosexual behavior. Let's not forget, in America today, 80% of deaths from AIDS are directly attributed to the homosexual lifestyle. Irresponsible sexual behavior by gay men and bi-sexuals, has been the number one cause in the spread of AIDS in America over the last decade, with white hetrosexual women, in their 20`s, having experienced the biggest increases associated with this deadly decease.

Correction:
That's disease, not decease.

Don't kid yourself - the left has been using judicial activism for ages. Ever heard of "Scopes Monkey Trial" or the "Roe VS Wade"? What about Madelein Murray Ohare (or whatever her name is?) If conservatives don't stand up for what is right and instead continue to give way to immoral and unjust rulings by judges afraid to stand up to the liberal zeitgeist of this age then we conservatives are surely in trouble. This is a battle for the minds of future generations - passivity at this point we'll ensure that what you fear will definitely come true.

I have been too busy the last couple of days to read everything on FR about this brave American, and I can't wait to catch up on my reading. This is the most wonderful, encouraging story I have heard in a while. This is a man who needs to enter the national arena of conservative dialog and commentary via newspaper columns or Fox TV. This man is the judicial version of Swartzkopf or Rummy! This guy's nick name heeds to be "Judge Balls-to-the-Wall"...God gave this man gonads to spare!

I love see the lesbian NAGs of NOW foaming at the mouth. Chief Justice Roy Moore hit a home run!!! :-)
To: redsoxallthewayintwothousand2
NOW also called for the support of our rapist ex-president. NOW is strictly a liberal group. Nothing to do with women and/or women's rights. They actually fought against Paula Jones' rights.

More like a liberal lesbian spinster old maids society. Bwahahahaha!!!
