The Clovis Unified School Board voted 5-2 to approve the club, with members Richard Lake and Susan Walker dissenting.

Supporters say the club promotes tolerance and equality among students of varying sexual orientation; people against the club say it promotes homosexuality and has no place in the schools.

Those who support homosexuals have a lust for it themselves.

It is possible to be BOTH brave and mistaken.

Since homosexuals can't procreate,they are either proof of Darwin's natural selection (nature's way of getting rid of defectives) or disobedient to God's laws. Either way, homosexuals are losers.

I've always thought that the "argument" of "gay-haters are usually hiding something!" to be lame.

I find your insinuation that people who don't have a problem with homoseuxality have a "lust for it" themselves to be equally lame.

Most homosexuals aren't infertile.

"It's a normal thing to be afraid of someone who is different than we are. The more that you get to know people ..., the more comfortable you'll be around them," parent Tom Laury said to the board. "This is what the purpose of this club is. It's about learning to get along with fellow human beings."

No, Tom. I don't think so. I think you're really saying this:

From The Overhauling of Straight America: "We do not need and cannot expect a full “appreciation” or “understanding” of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their shoulders, then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won."

Onward and upward towards that national shoulder shrug <shudder>.

I'll leave for later debate the idea that while I agree queers and faggots are human beings, I don't consider them fellow human beings.

Yeah, Pete is still superintendent. I would be interested to know where he stands on this matter.

Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As, to be hated, needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.

But where th' extreme of vice, was ne'er agreed:
Ask where's the North? at York, 'tis on the Tweed;
In Scotland, at the Orcades; and there,
At Greenland, Zembla, or the Lord knows where:
No creature owns it in the first degree,
But thinks his neighbour further gone than he!
Ev'n those who dwell beneath its very zone,
Or never feel the rage, or never own;
What happier natures shrink at with affright,
The hard inhabitant contends is right.

-- Pope, Essay on Man, I:V

I suppose that makes you one of the "hard inhabitants" of FR

I see them as mutants. Something went wrong. They're not male or female. They're "somethings."

I observed a lesbi couple break-up in a children's park-- it wasn't pretty, and it wasn't private. "Butch" held her lover-- and wouldn't let her leave-- "she" was leaving "her" for a man-- and tried to "talk her out of it," to no avail. I didn't stick around to see what happened next.

I believe the Clovis Board is in for a real surprise! Parents are already pulling their kids out! And I'm looking into options. One which is Fresno Christian apparently already has a waiting list. Unfortunately, what the clovis board morons forgot is there are a lot of parents in this school system willing to stand by their convictions.

The parents pleaded at that meeting last night to get rid of all of the non-curricular clubs rather than ok the gay club. They didn't even discuss it! And the Clovis representing attorney kept saying you'll take the chance of losing federal money if you deny this! What a crock!

What was also amazing is that only 3 teachers from the Clovis system had the guts to stand up for the welfare of their students. And not one teacher from Clovis High school had the guts to say anything. I certainly learned a whole lot last night about Clovis Unified. In their "Rights & Responsibilities Handbook" under Board Policy No. 2101 it states, #3. High personal standards of courtesy, decency, morality, clean language, honesty and wholesome relationships with others shall be maintained." Gee, it sounds like their in violation of their own policies!

I can't get my daughter out othere fast enough. She is heart broken, embarassed and ashamed for her school.

And to set the record straight (no pun intended) the thunderous applause was not for both sides, only about 15% of the people there supported this club....and 14% of those were from out of town.

Clovis should hang their heads in shame!

So, FresnoDA, wouldn't you agree that untying those 'legal entanglements' might be the direction to take...as opposed to bashing the Board for following these questionable laws? Silly me....I thought you might be a real 'D.A.'

Bashing the board?  Walrus, I have not even begun to bash this board.  At present, we are simply shining the light of awareness on them.  As for avoiding legal troubles, that is the gift our trial lawyer state has given us.  But just because the precedence of law is there, it does not mean all opposition is fraught!  In fact, the Liberals have used the courts for years as a battering ram against conservative and established values.

Roe vs. Wade, Gun Control, Gay Rights!  All are examples of existing laws being overturned in the liberals favor.  Why is it that conservative folks can not exercise the same virtues?

Easy answer.....Political Correctness, Tolerance and MODERATE Politicians.  IMHO!!

Can we please dispense with the hyperbole? This is not the title of the Fresno Bee article, I gather, so you're guilty of doing what we've been asked not to do: Posting articles while altering their titles.

This kind of thing belongs in the "comments" part of your post not the title.

This is really surprising to me. Clovis is the last place I would have expected this to happen. I have a friend who is a teacher and well knows the dynamics of employment at CUSD. She told me once that the upper levels of administration there are mostly Mormon, hence the school district had some very clear cut ideas about behavior and right and wrong. I'm stunned this happened.
