straight talk versus double talk

Liberals, both in political circles and the media, are bamboozled by the unprecedented popularity ratings consistently garnered by George W Bush. They simply cannot understand how the unwashed simpletons who reside in places other than the "elite" urban jungles can support such a man.

The reason liberals can't understand this reality lies in the fact that their icons live in an insular world. Forthright speech, to them, should be avoided at all costs. Vague statements and implied promises are their stock in trade. To them, telling a bald-faced lie to the populace is business as usual. To them, the residents of "flyover" country are bumpkins possessing sub-standard intellect, non-existent fashion sense and an utter lack of taste. Why, we hillbillies would rather watch Gunsmoke re-runs than ooh and ahh over a Robert Maplethorpe exhibit featuring naked guys with creatively placed bullwhips.

The left is in a state of discord and frustration as to Bush's success. How can it happen, they gasp. He isn't feeling people's pain. He's not a good speaker. He doesn't have a $400 haircut. He doesn't cry, smile or laugh on cue. He doesn't lead by polls. His wife isn't a conniving, inhuman witch. His kids seem like kids rather than robots. He prefers hamburgers over caviar, treats his dog like a friend rather than a photo-op. Of all the nerve...he doesn't even have sordid affairs with fat girls in the Oval Office.

That Bush's popularity baffles the left is the prime indicator of just how far out of touch they've become. Of late, every Democratic attempt to slander the President's actions or character have backfired. Therefore, here's my little gift to the Democrats. Here's why Bush is achieving "Reagan-esque" affection from the American people.

(A) He says what he thinks (B) He does what he says (C) He could give a rat's behind what the media elite think of him.

Pseudo-Republican John McCain yammered endlessly of his "straight talk." He realized the country was ravenous for change, but McCain's words and motivations were and are about as straight as a dog's hind leg. It was the novelist Robert Heinlein who said "if a man speaks of his honesty, make him pay cash." Unlike McCain, I've never once seen Bush try and impress on us how honest he is. He makes his points by action, not hot air.

The difference between Bush and McCain (or Daschle, Gore, Lieberman, Kennedy, etc) is that our President leads out of character and personal conviction. He is humble about his stature, does his job, and doesn't go fishing for applause. Looking at his record, it becomes apparent the man respects the difference between right and wrong, truth and lies. You might not like what he says, but he doesn't cloak his goals or desires.

People have respect for veracity, integrity and backbone. After surviving eight years of prevaricators, sycophants, lickspittles and jack-booted thugs, such attributes are a crust of bread to a starving man.

But the left will never understand this. They can't. It's not in their nature. They backtrack like a beagle on a hot scent. For example, Tom Daschle at first applauded the President for naming Iraq, Iran and North Korea as an "Axis of Evil." A few days later he criticized Bush's word choice.

"I think that it's important for us to look at each of these countries as threats to this country, as problems that we've got to address clearly," said Puff. "But, I think we've got to be very careful with rhetoric of that kind."

Right there is the difference between the right and left. Double-talk versus straight-talk. Bush names and warns those who seek our destruction, and he does it publicly. Daschle hems and haws around the edges, scared he might utter a politically incorrect comment that could offend voters or some sawed-off, third world dictator.

Daschle also said he didn't think the case had yet been made that these countries were building weapons of mass destruction. I guess Iraq kicked out the international inspectors because Saddam didn't want us to see his chocolate teddy bear factory.

It goes on and on. Leftist media mogul Ted Turner calls the September 11th terrorists "brave." One must wonder if he felt similar respect for the Manson family or Hitler's SS. It is not brave to be a mass murderer; it just means you have no regard for human life. Turner said the reason for the attacks were because people lived in poverty and had no hope.

No Ted...it's because their peculiar philosophy demands that all who don't obey the every whim of jihad, or radical Islam, should be butchered. It has nothing to do with socio-economic status.

This aversion to reality on the part of the left may be the dividing line between our current crop of liberal politicians and George Bush. The former view everything in terms of how rich you are, who you know, what parties you attended, what type of tux you've purchased for the next Hollywood Oscar shindig. The all-encompassing task of the liberal involves perpetuating the illusion they care about something other than themselves.

Bush, on the other hand, merely wants to eliminate those who attack our soil. He tells us that. He tells us his first duty is to protect this country, to insure individual liberties and, if necessary, to allow US forces to destroy our enemies single-handed.

That such strong words won't land him a photo-op with Barbara Streisand bothers him not a whit.

I wish "straight talk" was a magic formula for continued solid public support, but alas the public is often fickle and superficial. Remember, the same public that supports him now by 83% (or whatever) is the public that supported Clinton by 55% (or some said 70%) after the impeachment was found by the House.

The Public can be lead by media, lied to by their representatives, decieved by their impulses and carried away by emotion.

Is GWB doing a good job in his response to 9/11? Certainly. Does it give him a lock on support? With the cultural bias to the left of our media, I doubt it.

The Democrats should get a clue--the vast majority don't care about Enron, they don't care about campaign finance reform, they don't care about global warming, and they don't think it takes a village to raise a family.

On the other hand, talk to them about lowering taxes, protecting our borders, vouchers for private schools, and preserving the second amendment, and you will see some interest.

Democrats are on the losing side. No doubt, they'll resort to cheating yet again.

(Insure individual liberties) GW will sign the capnaign finance law. I guess free speach is just one of those things that we can over look as he did with the Clintons. Yeh he's real popular with 85%. Next session of Congress let's just remove the Constitution instead of the steady erosion. And 85% of you would probably go for it. Us 15% want our Constitution back.

The game of politics, unfortunately can be ugly and the democrats believe the end justifies the means. Fortunately for americans, we eventually know that that is not the case.

digger, i understand that freedom took a hit when the house and senate voted to suppress the freedom of speech through campaign contributions, however, like a miniscule tax cut implemented incrementally, let's take baby steps to get the control of the houses and then crush the status quo with a true reform bill.
