SAN JOSE - Prominent Republicans openly rebelled Friday against the notion of former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan becoming their party nominee for governor.

On the opening day of their state convention here, three former California party chairmen and a conservative former state senator blasted Riordan as a traitor who has undermined the GOP by supporting Democratic candidates.

"At the end of the day," he said, "Republicans are going to come together because there's a clear difference between Dick Riordan and Gray Davis."

That's the problem, said Schroeder. Riordan, he said, could not win the general election because he is politically further to the left than Davis.

LOL!

Thank you for posting this. As a Californian and a loyal Republican who is active in the party at the grass roots level, I don't know what to do about this election. I will vote for Simon in the primary, but expect Riordan to win the nomination. I sure don't want to see Davis re-elected, but I just can't see myself supporting a genuine RINO like Riordan. (Some purists consider anyone a RINO who doesn't agree with them 100%, but Riordan is the real deal.)

The Leftists in California are fast descending into ugly fights over who gets the spoils in a state they believe they've got locked up permanently. There is a very intersting and serious fight going on in L.A. among blacks and Latinos over who is going to be the new L.A. police chief. The liberal Dem mayor, Jim Hahn, has thrown the current Chief (who is black) overboard, and the black community is seething over it. Hahn hasn't said so publicly, but I suspect he is looking for a Latino to appoint. As the various Leftist factions squabble over their piece of the pie, the state is (to borrow a phrase from Robert Bork) slouching further and further toward Gommorah.

Could a Gov. Riordan at least bring some fiscal sanity back to our state government? If I thought he could, would that be a reason to vote for him? I don't know, because I don't trust him to stand up to our Legislature, which is dominated by far Leftists. If I thought he would at least veto some of the worst Leftist bills, I would consider holding my nose and voting for him.

My sympathies to you (and all responsible voters in CA) regarding your dilemma. If Riordan is a republican, then Barbara Streisand is Condi Rice. He really couldn't even be considered a RINO. He's a REDO (Republican on election day only) and the question is: when is everybody finally gonna let him have it for the deceptive way he's led his political career? Sadly, although I have many relatives in CA who will be detrimentally impacted by another term by the infamously incompetent & financially irresponsible Davis, I think in the long term it's best to vote for him.Corrupt doofus that he is, he is actually MORE conservative than Riordan in almost every way.And at least after Davis has a chance to continue his wholesale destruction of California, the property prices out there might finally come down, and that little lot I have my eye on in Montecito might at last be more affordable!

You know, there IS something to your reasoning. I would never vote for Davis, but may not wind up voting for Riordan, either. I haven't sat out an election since 1976, but may do so this time. Redistricting has pretty much killed any hope Republican congressional candidates had in my locality. So unless Simon somehow becomes our nominee for Gov., I see no compelling reason to go to the polls this time. And believe me, I'm no ideologue who expects 100% purity from a candidate on every issue. So when a Republican office seeker has a problem attracting someone like me to his candidacy, that person is going to have a hard time counting on his base come election day. BTW, thanks for the chuckle about the lot in Montecito, and good luck if you ever really do make a try at buying it.

As a Republican voter, I have always voted even when I felt I was voting for the lesser of two evils who happened to be a Republican. This works when you vote for the state or federal legislature as this determines which party will be in control of the Assembly, Senate, etc.

In the case of governor, I have to ask myself who is more likely to control our leftist socialistic legislature. At this point, I doubt Riordan would oppose them. He impresses me as being too eager to be seen as a "nice guy, loved by all." I think his donations in the past support this.

As for his pro or anti-abortion stance, I don't trust him to be a principled individual on this issue. I am not rabidly anti-abortion as some on this site but do get disgusted when I see it being used as an alternative to birth control by girls too ignorant or lazy to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

I am more concerned about his stands on guns (he thinks we should be licensed like we are licensed to drive cars) and immigration. (He supported a rabid leftist to succeed him as mayor. Thankfully he lost, stalling the total takeover of LA by illegals.)

By the way, while CA is suffering from the recession and will have to borrow to pay our bills, our legislature gives illegal aliens the right to attend our colleges and pay "in-state tuition." Gray Davis went along with this but Riordan said NOTHING. Never mind that a 1996 federal law said you cannot discriminate against US citizens in favor of illegal aliens!

If Riordan really was a Republican, he would be using this against Davis! Doesn't anyone care that the Democrats are violating federal law? (By the way, the illegals in NY just lost a case on this issue and the judge cited the 1996 law!)

The problem is this...Riordan is no different than Davis. That is it in a nut shell. I expect not to agree with a republican candidate 100%, but in Riordan's case I disagree with him 100%. I will vote, but I am going to do the famous undervote gig, and skip the gov box if Riordan is the canidate after the primary. I am voting for Simon or nobody.

No, No, don't sit it out, vote for a republican anyway. If Riordan wins the primary we're going to have to have a shadow convention and write-in a candidate.

If Riordan wins the Republican primary the CA Republican party is fully suborned. Abandon it find someone else to organize with. We'll need to offer a clear alternative.

But the pigs haven't flown yet, so take it easy....

I agree, if Riordan is elected gov, the republican party in this state is finished for a long time. I would vote for Simon (my choice) or Bill Jones only.

"... has angered conservative members of the party with his support for abortion rights, gun controls and benefits for illegal immigrants."
