I heard that joke..... it was almost as funny as the one about the priest, the rabbi and the thyratron circuit!

This is almost as bad as calling a department store and having some woman page Mike Hunt over the loudspeaker.

Funny you should say that.
I work with a Mike Hunt, and he vehemently insists on being called MICHAEL.
*snicker* Our plant has loudspeakers all over the plant site too, hundreds of them...

OK, so I've not seen this mentioned anywhere else. Not an apology on MSNBC, not on Newsmax, nowhere.

Was this real or was this a little Photoshop prank?

Wonder if it was intentional as the MLK-day plaque honoring James Earl Ray (instead of Jones). Maybe a little get-even?

would say that if it was a typo, then it's no big deal (even though it does make MSNBC look bad)...if someone DID do it purposely, they should never be allowed near a studio again. Good luck proving it in any case.

Usually, these names are entered into the network computers several hours ahead of time, and those lists of names are generally looked over more than once, by more than one person before the show goes on the air, checking for typos and errors. In addition, the list is on the screen of the producer's PC during the show, as well as at least one assistant's PC, so they can follow along. In addition to THAT, the director puts every graphic up on a "preview" monitor in the control room before a few seconds before putting it on the air, again to check for errors, and can simply skip over it if it has a typo.

At least, this is how it's SUPPOSED to work in a sane, well-staffed network newsroom. Perhaps MSNBC has become SO cheap and laid off SO many people that there are too few people doing too much work, and we all know that care is the first thing that goes out the window when the workplace becomes downsized and disgruntled.

So anyway, there are several possibities here:

1) MSNBC has gutted the staff so deeply that nobody had time to even check like they're supposed to.

2) It was indeed an intentional act. If this is the case, I can promise you that the person or persons responsible have been fired. I know it's hard for most conservatives to believe, but in the major national media, the obsession with "diversity" is at an absolutely psychotic level, and it is all, all, ALL about skin color (and, to a much lesser extent, being female or gay). It does not matter that Niger Innis is a Republican or a conservative; the ONLY thing that matters is that he is black. Anyone who in any way "disrespected" a black person in a network newsroom - and the management gets to make that judgement, which cannot be appealed - would be escorted out the door by the building guards within minutes.

3) Some idiot forgot to put Niger's name into the computer ahead of time, and ended up hastily banging it into the computer as the show was going out live (an act which is far more annoying and complicated than you would think, trust me on this, I've been there). And he or she screwed up. Maybe the G key just got stuck. And when you're making those sorts of live changes on-the-fly, the chances of making stupid typos go up about 10,000%.

4) It was indeed purely unintentional, several people really did check over the lists of names ahead of time, and it just truly never caught any of their eyes.

Now, I happen to believe (4) is by far the most likely scenario. However, I also think it's the most damning towards MSNBC. After all, if at least four different people went over that list of names ahead of time, and NONE of them noticed the word "NIGGER" screaming at them from the computer screen, it says one hell of a lot about the true subconscious feelings of these caring liberal journalists, now doesn't it? Any of us would have caught that error hours ahead of time.

It's real. It was covered in the New York Daily News this morning.

I totally agree with your very cogent analysis. It obviously comes out of a deep well of experience and common sense.

Sure enough. Right after posting that, I started seeing links to the NYDN article. Thanks. So unbelievable.

Can you imagine being the producer on this show the moment he noticed it? I can only imagine what it feels like to feel every blood cell in your body rushing through the veins in your head at 10,000 mph.

Why should he lose his job? Can you prove intent on the guys part?

Grow up!

Anyone idiotic enough to let that get through SHOULD be fired, regardless of intent. Yeah, mistakes happen, but come on--Nigger instead of Niger? Shouldn't that raise a HUGE red flag in one's mind as it's being typed?

Niger Innis is now a member of SUSSA's Board of Advisors. He has too much class to make a stink about this.
