What the dems did was paint McCarthy as a part of HUAC - but he couldn't have been because McCarthy was a SENATOR. This little LIE was the reason they got away with it. Most people didn't realize the "UnAmerican Activities Committee" was a function of the House, not the Senate; that's why the dems continued to say it was McCarthy who "blacklisted the movie stars".

Plus as far as I understand it the "blacklist" had nothing to do with the government at all. It was Hollywood "policing" it's own. Correct me if I'm wrong.
