Staying On The Subject
Personal ^ | 02/05/02 | Windy-Dave

There is something that has evolved here on Free Republic Topics. There are many good topics started here but because of the inability to stay on the subject started, the debates get steered into the ditch. I derrive the majority of my news saavy off of this forum. This is very disconcerting for me in this respect and I always "Try" to stay focused on what is being discussed but it is very difficult to do.

I don't know if it is done intentionally and I know there are disruptive people who enjoy creating chaos and dis- unity. This forum being what it is and what it does, for large numbers of people out here in the ozone, makes it vitally important that we get better communication and exchange of ideas.

I hope that you will attempt to do this but not at the expense of spirited debate. As I said much of what I know comes from this and other similiar forums. I am not the sharpest tack in the box so I need all the help I can get to stay up and informed!

Anyone know anything about Saturn cars? Are they reliable?

Don't know nuthin about their cars. But their station wagons are damned good. On my second one. Probably own a third someday.

There are many good topics started here but because of the inability to stay on the subject started, the debates get steered into the ditch.

I chalk it up sometimes to disrupters. A person who post the same rant 3 times inside the first dozen posts. Sometimes these people never return to the thread; their work is done as most people reading will be so outraged by what they've said that they feel they must respond.

Other times, they pick around the edges of an argument and never respond to posters' rebuttals even though they stay with a thread. Again, a single disrupter can derail an argument.

After awhile, some of the names keep coming up with this tactic. You can check some of the other threads a person has posted on to see how often they hold to this tactic.

Some of the other disrupters will post a democrat site sourced article or other editorial never to voice in on the thread. Some of the threads will run to a hundred responses without a single followup post by the poster. When they remain active posters, it is a suspicious act (tying up system resources and the time of those who are responding).

Certainly we can always find something to chime in on here on FR and some threads do nothing but provoke outrage.

I checked in there about a year ago under my screen name here. Well, I forgot my password. Then I got married, moved and have no clue how to get back in there. It always comes up that my name is taken. I keep telling Yahoo that it's really me. They don't believe me.

That has to be the single most ridiculous thing I've seen on FR. But then there was that speech from Tom Dashole, and...

Hmm...sounds like a problem for Dear Abby : )

(This particular column just happened to be there. It has no relation to your comment, unless you want to make up a witty remark.)

Seriously....sorry, don't know how to help on that one. You would think the yahoos at Yahoo would know who's who....or, is that, whom? : ) At least the posts can be read, even if you're not logged in there.

Have you written to customer service? I forgot my Yahoo password once and there was a prompt for them to email a hint to me. After only a year, your email and password should still be in their database. If you don't get the prompt while trying to sign in, email customer service and explain your situation. They are pretty helpful. Or create a new account with a new screen name. Don't miss out, dude!
