Brit Hume just had a report on "Special Report" about Gray Davis (California governor) taking over $119,000 from Enron, more than anyone in Congress!

He showed a clip of Dim-bulb getting grilled by reporters on the State Capitol steps, and he was losing his temper as he stated that he has stopped taking contributions from energy companies since he became governor. He refuses to return the money.

Let us not forget that California is mandated to balance the budget. Since it cannot be done, Davis has decided he WON'T fund the pensions. Hoping to put the money back when things get better. Notice the media ignoring this little fact.

Gov. Gray Davis was the top recipient of campaign contributions from utilities, with $348,000, followed by Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, D-San Francisco, with $172,000, and Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg, D-Los Angeles, with $165,000.

I keep saying this, but I don't think you folks recognize how these sleazy dumbocrats work. If Blackout Davis admits to taking $100K plus from Enron, there has to be other items. My bet is that Davis' two kids, both of whom were working for probable Chandra killer, Condidit, got many things of value from Enron. Check plane usage, luxury box useage, consulting fees, options, and insider information. Some of this will be impossible to discover. But, remember, we are talking about crooked and arrogant dumbocrats and a criminal company. Before the Davis-outs in CA, Enron and the Gov were beyond reproach and could get away with a lot of stuff. Then, they could call criminal behavior by any label they wanted and get away with it. Today, the same behaviors will be seen for what they are, crimes. The Bee has social pages with lots of pictures. Issues for 2000 and the first half of 2001 must have lots of shots that would embarass Ole Blackout.

Davis has a double dip going on with the pensions. Not only is he using pension funds to offset some of the defecit, he has negotiated labor contract with state employees that has the state paying 5% more of the retirement of the employees so they can take home more money without showing an actual raise in gross pay.

Clever, but not particulatly well-timed.

Plus, his budget relies for its (fictitious) balance on over-optimistic revenue projections for this year, projections that even the legislature's budget analysts won't sign on to. Unfortunately, there's no mechanism in state government to puncture projections based on happy thoughts. What will happen is that after the election (of course) the state will suddenly discover that those revenues didn't show up as expected. Oops. Guess the budget wasn't really balanced after all and we'll have to raise taxes.

With Democrats now in control of U.S. Senate committees, televised investigations could begin immediately, designed to link Bush to energy company campaign contributors and to blame those same energy companies for California’s woes. The prime target of such hearings will almost certainly be Enron. But do not hold your breath waiting for such hearings to document how the bulk of energy company contributions in California went to Democrats, including millions to Davis himself and a $7,500 Enron donation to Davis’ energy czar S. David Freeman, recipient of $95,000 in energy special interest money when he ran for the state Assembly in a March 2000 primary.

I agree with the portion of your comments addressing deregulation. If you're going that route, you must totally deregulate. Half measures contributed to a portion of California's problems, perhaps more than we suspect.

Can't argue with that at all. I hate to address this issue again, but the little guy is the one that takes it up the kazoo every time these situations come up. The large munis and the corporate entities put the screws to the little guy in ways he is ill prepared, or simply unable to defend against. Isn't that what government entities are supposed to guard against? Will, I give Davis an "F" on this subject.
