If an American business person or American tourist is kidnapped in Columbia by drug lords is it the responsibility of the US Military to go and get them? NO! And this case is no different.

I don't see him as a hero. I see him as a press member who gambled for a story, and lost.

I don't see him as a gambler. I see him as a journalist doing his job. No different than a WTC firefighter going up 80 flights of stairs. Both jobs entail risk *not* gambling. He was murdered not for being a journalist, but for being an American. A horrific tragedy that no one deserves.

I agree. The press hyped and distorted the conditions of the prisoners at Gitmo. Now one of their own reaps what they've sown.

This may be one of the few ways that the liberals in the media might begin to understand the difference between irresponsible language and cold reality. Comparing Christians in this country to the Taliban, or distorting the treatment of the prisoners at Guantanimo are just some examples. When reality catches up with distortions of reality it can be quite a blow.

As far as the journalist, we were his 'passengers' and our tickets were paid for with the 'freedom of the press'.

How constitional. But, what story is worth giving up your life for? He didn't print the story, so no one is reading it. Was it worth it then? Does he become a hero for NOT getting the scoop?
He gambled, and lost.

Nope, fanatics feel they can never do enough for their cause. They are so guilt ridden over their personal falts and impurities that they feel the only way to cleanse themselves is by causing pain, either to self or others. That is one reason that most major religions include some form of atonement ceremony that allows the angst to be shed in peaceful, constructive ways. In the mean time those who choose such forms of evil as murder must be destroyed.

"BAD IMAGE ALERT. Bodies dropped from that height don't bounce. They splatter-Like bugs on a windshield. We'd need a lot of plastic bags."

Drop um over the ocean. A combined execution/burial at sea. Quick, easy, no mess to clean up.

The thing about terrorism is that there is no time when it's "safe". The 9/11 victims thought it was safe to go to work at the Towers that day. If another attack occurs, I'll bet the next victims would have thought they we going to be 'safe' too :-(

What does any of this have to do with a reporter putting himself in a deadly position to get a scoop. Those at the WTC would have taken the day off had there been a reported threat. You're going out on a real limb now.

As a firefighter does his job he is supposed to have three priorities in mind:

1. Self preservation
2. The safe rescue of others, and
3. Preservation of property

In that order.

Your response (as do the two from Born in a Rage) fails the comparability test.

I don't think tons of junk mail is worth losing ones life over. You have the wisdom of gays. Go for broke, get AIDs, but be brave about it.

He was a journalist doing his job. It can be a dangerous job but he knew the risks and was willing to take them, just like a soldier, a firefighter, or even a window washer. Is everyone with a dangerous job foolish?

No, but everyone with a dangerous job has the ability to act foolishly...and I'll use this example...

A few years back in NYC, a group of the Police department's water rescue team were doing a situational rescue demonstration for a group of observers. The man who's job it was to play the drowning man decided it would look more realistic if he didn't wear his life presever (ignoring the mandated procedural protocol). He was taken under by a whirlpool and washed up two days later, two miles away, and very much dead.

That is an example of someone with a dangerous job who lost his life because he acted foolishly.

Considering the warnings that were provided to Mr. Pearl by people who's knowledge of the situation and it's dangers were well worth heeding, I will charcterize his actions as foolish.

But!!!!!...if he was CIA, then he was by all means a hero.

I think the circumstances here are different....but, at any rate....we are at war with terrorists and if any American is kidnapped and killed by them (I don't care where in the world it is) it is an attack on our country and freedoms....all of us. Terrorists attack civilians and it could happen anytime, anywhere in the world and this mans tragic death is no different. It is a 'different' kind of war.

I have to agree with you. These liberal news pukes can't wait to uncover dirt on the US and the US Military, but as soon as they lie down with the dogs and come up with serious fleas, they expect the same military to lay down their lives to extract them from their own foolishness.

The only ironic thing about this is that this "journalist" may inadvertently helped doom the very cash cow he was pursuing.

As for his pregnant wife and unborn child, well, he should have thought more about his family than himself. When we decide to become Fathers, our personal aspirations need to be hung on the wall in deference to the people dependent upon us.

There is something to be said for a policy of going the extra mile to get any American back, even one who himself does not like his country -- even a Johhnie Taliban type, who will face prosecution and perhaps execution after he is rescued.

The enemy needs to know that messing with the USA is a stupid, stupid idea and completely counter to any sense of self-preservation.

ABSOLTUELY!

I along with everybody else condemn without qualification this vile murder and call for swift and lethal retaliation against Pearl's murderers. And I am very, very suspicious of potential involvement by at least some Pakistani authorities in this kidnapping and murder. I am convinced that people in the Pakistani government---particularly ISI---know more about this than they're letting us know, instead coming up with an absurd story trying to put the blame on India.
