Concealed Weapons
WCSC TV5 Snooze ^ | January 30, 2002 | Reported by Herve Jacobs hjacobs@wcsc.com

How would you react if the person worshipping next to you in church was also carrying a concealed weapon? That could soon happen if some state lawmakers have their way! The bill, proposed by state representative Jake Knotts, is sparking heated debate in the state legislature and also on the streets of Charleston.

The church, a place of worship and soon some parishioners may be carrying concealed pistols. A proposed state law would allow guns inside the church if officials there give their blessings.

(Rev. Keller)"I think the whole idea is ridiculous."

Reverend Bert Keller leads the services at the Circular Congregational Church downtown.

(Keller)"I think the practice of civilians carrying concealed weapons is dangerous, unnecessary and promotes violence which is already in epidemic proportions in our society."

The proposal would also allow concealed weapons in public college parking lots. College of Charleston students are concerned.

(student)"I suppose some people might need to defend themselves. I think when people start carrying weapons, it's more dangerous than helpful."

(grad student)"I don't feel good about that for religious purposes. I'm a quaker and we don't believe in firearms at all so I would naturally be against that."

Gun owners also would be allowed to take concealed weapons inside of state parks like Charlestowne Landing. That's right. You could pack a lunch and also pack some heat.

(resident)"You really don't know who you can trust these days to be honest. Just because you get a permit, it doesn't mean that person might not attack you or do something."

But don't look for guns in a church, college parking lot or state park near you just yet. The bill is still going through a verbal shoot-out in the legislature. The concealed weapons bill is stuck in the Senate judiciary committee. Representative Knotts expects it to make it the floor for a full vote sometime this session.

What the hell is this creeping usage we are seeing of referring to citizens as civilians.

We are not yet some militarized police state where the people are officially classified by their caste, with military and armed beauracrat on top, leaving the lowest rung of the caste system to mere "civilians."

Why doesn't this anti-self-defense coward cut to the chase and start referring to the sheep in his flock as comrades.

Another piece of unbiased reporting from the unbiased media. Hmmmm, unbiased is beginning to mean stupid.

I know I'd feel much safer. Even more so if I'm the one carrying! If the criminal doesn't heed the word of God, a large 1911A1 .45 speaks loudly.

When I was in CCW class here in North Carolina, the other guy in the class that day was a minister!

He said that his church often had thousands of dollars of offering money every Sunday - and that he felt a need to be armed for that reason alone!

GUN REVIEWS free from ad-money bias - with emphasis on woman-friendliness of guns tested!

Here in Madison about 5 or 6 years ago, a local black minister known for preaching against homosexuality was targeted. The lefties/gay groups broke windows of his church during a service. Maybe they'd think twice if the congregation was armed.

Temple. But I would attempt to sneak it out of his holster.

I need a .45 1911 A frame. I don't have one. If I am stealthy enough....

If it's in a Fobus you can not be stealthy enough.

The CCW folks should start including a reminder note in the offering envelope, telling the pastor that his parisioner is carrying every single time, and has for years.

Remember the lunatic who killed 7 kids in the Dallas church 3 years ago? I wish somebody in the church had a gun that day.

If you can't trust the person next to you with a gun, you're worshipping at the wrong church...

Indifferent, or mildly interested depending on the weapon.

When I took a martial arts class the teacher comically took a knife and set it in the middle of the mat. We all stared at it amused as it sat there and did nothing. It was a great and non-verbal way to get the point across that you defend yourself against the attacker, not the knife.

Cocealed Carry Laws were finally instituted in Florida back in 1987. I was one of the first 150 person who was issued one. I have been carrying my .45 since then and had no problems with the law. It has saved me to become a victim several times. Miami, where I live just reported a tremendous down in crime rate. (They say because Govt. actions agains crime) I said because more and more decent, law abiding persons are carrying everyday. Criminals know that, and think twice before risking their skin, just in case. Don't pay attention to those nonsenses the liberals (communists?) say about CCWs. They are the best thing that can happen in the fight against crime and now terror.

I'd make mine just an anonymous note, separate from the offering envelope. No need to let him know exactly WHO is armed. Let the paranoia drive him nuts, he'll resign and then we could get a more rational and intelligent leader for our congregation.

He apparently does not have much confidence in his congregation. He must assume that all of them are crazy and would come to church prepared to kill their fellow worshipers.
