Domino's Pizza Founder Proposes 250 Foot Tall Crucifix [as big as Statue Of Liberty]

ANN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan wants to build a 250-foot-high freestanding crucifix at his Domino's Farms office park in this Washtenaw County community.

The 25-story structure, topped by a 40-foot figure of Christ, would be about as tall as the Statue of Liberty, and 51 feet shorter than the tip of its torch.

We saw the Groom, Texas cross last summer (between Amarillo and Shamrock). There was no advance advertisement, just saw it and drove off the highway to check it out. There are the stations of the cross which are life size and the sculpture quality rivals anything I've ever seen. There is a special Tomb for the Unborn on the east side of the Cross. Also a building with a replica of the Shroud of Turin. Run by volunteers and donations. They are still building and we plan to make a special trip to see it again when we have the time absorb it all. Non-denominational.

Anyone who is trying to advance conservative Roman Catholic causes obviously has an agenda. If he'd call it 'art' with a vulgar name, nobody would care.

Well, it is said, "de gustibus non disputandem est," but nonetheless, I must interject to disagree. The best pizza on the planet, bar none, is my wife's homemade pizza, somewhere between thin and thick crust, with spinach, feta cheese, fresh peppers, freshly browned (in red wine) italian sausage, mushrooms, and (on my side of the pizza) anchovies.

As for the 250 ft crucifix, those who don't like it, or don't like the fact that it isn't a 'simple cross' are welcome to spend their money, to erect on their land a monument suitable to their tastes or religious sensibilities. What? You don't have several million dollars handy? Awwww... too bad, so sad.

The crucifix is not a graven image. A graven image is a fetish or idol. The crucifix is a symbol of the Catholic faith. Christ on the cross serves as a reminder of His love for us and that is was our sins that nailed Him to the cross. A cross without Christ is a symbol of ancient Rome and a lower case t. Christ deserves to be remembered on the cross. Without His Crucifixion there would have been no Resurrection.

You are free to erect a cross to suit your belief just as Monaghan and other Catholics are free to use the crucifix to keep us humble and remind us not to sin.

I'm not RC either, but I'm not offended. I like the idea of a simple cross, but hey, it's not my money..........

There's a large cross on top of a mountain near Uniontown, Pa. (south of Pittsburgh), which is just a beautiful sight. Curiously enough, it's at a Methodist camp and conference center. I guess not all Methodists are offended by the sight of the cross.
