Does this remind anyone of the cults that the Ceasars of the roman empire had?

This sounds like the old Westernizers vs Slavophiles debate ussually the Tsars embraced one or the other at particular times as it suited their purposes but hated them both.

"The group demands strict loyalty and discipline from its members, who are handed a long checklist on joining which includes commands to"
'read at least six Russian classics a year, whether you enjoy them or not, and visit the site of a battle where the Russians were victorious'."Reading books written by Russian authors hardly sounds SINISTER TO ME! Visiting sites where Russia had victories AGAINST HITLER....not THE USA, doesn't sound all that bad either! I have been to Verdun and Normandy...they were trips of respect to those who died fighting nazis! Why shouldn't Russians visit their battle sites???
"Mr Yakimenko's latest attempt to indoctrinate members, aged mainly between 14 and 30, is a proposal to 'purify Russian literature'. Modern 'liberal' books, which depict the difficulties of modern Russian life, have been damned by Walking Together."
I hate most modern American literature....so, I don't blame them for "dissing" Russian modern literature. Give me Mark Twain or Poe any day!!! They can always read WAR AND PEACE!! WONDERFUL BOOK!!
"The group has in turn published thousands of copies of a book of stories recounting the Red Army's 'glorious victories' during the Second World War. These books were offered free in exchange for 'corrupting' works."
WOW!! That is sooooooo SINISTER!!! Maybe I could exchange some old Cosmopolitan mags for a couple of copies of Rise and Fall of the Third Reich....if we had such a plan here!!
Somehow, I think these folks are not neo-commies...just Russians trying to be patriots and good citizens. We could use MORE patriotism right here too.
One more thing about that cult of personality thing.... HOGWASH!! I see pictures of George Bush all the time on FR...I love it!! Does that mean that we freepers HAVE A CULT of personality for GEORGE BUSH??? No, it does not....we like him and we like what he does and what he stands for. Why, I even saw pictures of BUSH with PUTIN....by golly, they were great photos!!!! I loved them!!

My thoughts exactly! Nothing like some good old Russian-bashing by the usual patriots when there nothing else going on in their lives. Just think, 13,000,000 Russian men were killed in battle against Hitler (plus 7,000,000 civilians kiled) and a group which urges respect for their memory just HAS to be a Hitler-like group, according to some jerks. The world watches and remembers.

I hate to see Russia bashed...they had to struggle against stalin and hitler. I admire their courage in facing hitler and kicking his @$$!
I wish them well now!!

Interesting choice of rags. I particularly liked their other choice stories: "American Taliban planned on taking four wives.", "Injunction Issued Vs. Miss Cleo Psychic Group... ", "MICHAEL JACKSON, LIZ TAYLOR, BRANDO IN SEPT 11 PANIC...",

The Russians need to realize pretty quick that they are not going to be able to make it without the West as a whole because of the geographic and demographic realities of their position. They flirt with Saddam and China but those are dead-end roads. Surely they can't imagine they have a place in a Chinese world or a Saddam/Osama world.

Russians can't seem to get up for work in the morning without someone scourging them, and life without some pressure - as under Yeltsin - quickly turns to
bardak. No ruler can keep order in 11 timezones without a strong hand.
A US-style constitution and freedoms only worked on an self-regulating people which unfortunately exists nowhere, not even in the US. Like the "Roaring Twenties", this era is fast developing into another 1930s-style "Age of Dictators".
