>> There's not a chance that as a senator, Dole would be a RINO of the Specter/Snowe/Collins variety. She will probably support Bush a large majority of the time. <<

Liddy Dole worked for LYNDON JOHNSON (of all people!) to initiate his "great socity" socialist programs, and the ONLY reason she "joined" the Republican Party MUCH LATER was because she married Bob. She was a registered liberal 'RAT the last time she lived in North Carolina. She did a mediore job when she worked under Reagan and Bush, where all she did is introduce new federal regulations and complain Reagan was too right wing and "macho" for female votes. She did not come out for ANY conservative issue in her Presidential campaign last year, but she did come out in support of several liberal ones. In short, there is nothing to support your theory that she won't morph into Olympia Snowe if elected. She's also not likely to stick around for mulitiple terms because of her age.

Now, here's a REAL Republican candidate that will CONTINUE Helms' record:

And don't tell me only "moderate" Republicans can win in N.C. On the contrary, in the last twenty years or so, the only Republicans who won there were conservatives (Helms, Faircloth, East, etc.) Parker has money, charisma, intelligence, and most of all, conservativism. Vote for Parker, NOT Dole.

It's odd. Very odd... that the Pubs wouldn't back a REAL conservative from NC. Why, I don't pretend to know. But I DO know that if Helms had his constuents at heart, he couldn't do this. And if the RNC deigns to give a REAL Republican the money and backing to get his vote out, then we should complain NOW, loud and long, to the RNC to which we gave our hardwon bucks.

Well, obviously you don't have to be moderate to win in NC; look at who she's replacing. But Elizabeth Dole in particular is extremely popular in North Carolina, which is what some people here seem to be missing. I doubt that popularity will heavily erode over the course of 9 months, unless she does something monumentally stupid. Jim Hunt not running is what really helped seal the deal for Dole.

Sure, there's other people I'd rather have in there than Liddy, but the minute she decided to run, she became the Republican nominee. To all of you who insist she'll turn into Snowe on steroids, I guess we can only wait and see. I really don't think that's gonna happen, but we'll have to wait a year at the very least to find out.

BTW, I think she'll serve 2 terms. She'd be 78 after two terms, which isn't unreasonable at all considering how old many Senators are when they retire or die nowadays.
