Sen. Helms May Endorse Liddy Dole This Week at CPAC
The National Journal and The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer ^ | Saturday January 26, 2001 | 'Weekend Scoop' Political Tip Sheet Staff

Posted on 01/26/2002 9:02:04 AM PST by umbra

Senator Jesse Helms (Republican-NC) 'has steadfastly avoided taking sides' in past GOP primaries, but he 'is about to bend his rule some--if not outright break it.'

Helms is scheduled to address CPAC on 1/31, and he 'has invited Elizabeth Dole to introduce him.'

Helms apparently plans to 'lavish her with praise.'

Helm's spokesman Jimmy Broughton 'wouldn't say whether Helms plans to endorse Dole, suggesting: 'Stay Tuned.'

One of Dole's GOP rivals, atty Jim Snyder,: "All this pomp and circumstance is to expected for someone who's been in Washington for so long.'

Dole is a nice enough lady on the surface. The problem is that she is basically a Washington bureaucrat who has spent way too much of her life inside the beltway. She's a good choice pragmatically, i.e., it helps the Republicans. But she's not someone who is going to do any shaking up in town--and that's what's really needed. Oh well.

Liddy Dole will be part of the problem, not part of the solution. It's easy for her to change her stances depending on what group she's speaking to, because she doesn't have any real principles on which to stand for election.

And I totally reject the argument that it's better to elect a liberal Republican than a liberal Democrat. That's like saying it's better to get stabbed in the back by your friends than by your enemies. Makes no sense at all.

And to answer a question from another post: No, there is NO virtue in slowing the progression down the road to hell, because too many people adopt that mindset and become unwilling to do the hard work required to stop and reverse the process. It's a total cop-out, and it is part of the problem and not the solution.

It is painful to think that our Jesse Helms would willingly offer his seat to a candidate such as his enemies over the years would have rejoiced in replacing him with. Say it ain't so Jesse!

Helms' endorsement of Liddy isn't a sign of her conservative credentials, it is motivated by his friendship with Bob Dole and the fact there is no credible conservative challenger. If I lived in NC, I'd vote for Snyder in the primary but he isn't a viable candidate.

Maybe true, maybe not. I am not a Dole lover by any stretch but there is such a thing as common sense. If you are so anti-Dole, and wanna stand strong for your beliefs by voting your conscience for someone other than her--why the hell not vote for the most liberal, Communist Demoncrap on the machine? That'll teach them Pubbie bigshots, by crackee. And if your liberal protest candidate wins, it'll surely make citizens so PO'd, that if they don't rush to Washington and burn down their congressional offices, they'll CERTAINLY throw their scabby a$$es out in the next election, when they see the error of their voting ways, right?? Wrong. The time to do your "conscience voting" is in primaries, and in trying to get YOUR candidate on the ballot. If you flop, for Gawd's sake, use your brain in November and go with the lesser of two evils. Some of you bitch about Bush, but, hey, his Att'y. Gen. and his Justice Dept. said, flat out, that the Second Amendment refers to INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS and NOT a militia. They want like $43-bil. to resurrect and de-Klintonize the armed forces, they're probably gonna tighten up borders and track illegals, Rummy is adored--even by Demoncraps. . .etc., etc. Doesn't sound too leftist to ME. But it all means zilch to YOU??? C'mon!

Gee, that is exactly what we need, another bleeding heart liberal Republican in the Senate. Maybe she can switch parties after the President makes her mad. Her hubbie was a spineless compromiser, she won't be much better.

Did she say anythign about the horrors of hunting ducks with a "riot gun" or hunting deer with a "sniper rifle" DEFINITIONS ? OK well tell me what a sniper rifle will do to a deer that a regular rifle wont ! notheing its a faster harder more acurate load is all if i choose to use an ak47 for home defence it should be my choice not a choice yoked by lieing intentions have you ever shot a 22 , 44 , 45 , 38 uzi , ak 47 ,9 mil , do you know the difference ? i do and have shot them all what if 4 intruders break into YOUR home and all you have is a 22 pistol how many you gonna stop or would you hide under the bed ?

I for one am not going to hide its my family and property on the line and i will take them out the larger faster the caliber the better chance i have of surviving over them REMEMBER THEY ARE VIOLATING MY FREEDOMS AND MY DOMAIN UNINVITED !!!!!

So make your play of words carefully if you trust her vote for her after tha last 8 years and all the flip flopping done I WONT..... but its your choice not mine

One thing i need to add im not attacking Lidia Dole as a person..... her ISSUES and VOTES are what matters and shes made it clear in the past that she dont want you to have a choice in what gun you own i have seen nothing in the constitution that regulates the type of gun you own or how many or as a matter of fact registering it THESE TACTICS FLY IN THE FACE OF THE CONSTITUTION AND OUR BILL OF RIGHTS

I didn't see the need to put a </sarcasm> tag after my posting.

Perhaps I should have.. Because we all know the difference between a sniper rifle and a deer rifle is who's holding it.

And one man's duck gun is another man's riot gun..

What I took issue with was the term "assault rifle" because, by the time the spin stops.. That can mean nearly anything.

Superficial differences in the same weapons and suddenly you have some idiot screaming "assault rifle, assault rifle.. OMG, OMG.. it's an assault rifle Ahhh!"

I suspect that Helms is so fearful that the Democrats will sweep NC in November that he will hold his nose and "endorse" Mrs. Dole. He probably thinks that "only" she can win, when in reality perhaps any Democrat of the John Edwards school will reduce the NC GOP to rubble, much as the Demos have done to the GOP already in GA, MO, CA, and other states. The GOP just can't excite its shrinking base to bother to come to the polls.

You know, K Mart has the same problem..

Personally, I blame the customer.. and the competition for even existing in the first place.

I mean, it can't be K Mart's fault if people don't patronize their stores.. Right?

I mean, Right?

Um, I don't think so. She may have some liberal tendencies at heart, but she's not stupid. She knows what she needs to do to stay in office and remain popular in NC.

Well no offense but apparently you weren't here when Edwards ran for office. He was center to leaning conservative in most of his speeches and hardly touched any issue of importance to native North Carolinians. He promised the tobacco growers and hog farmers in the East that he 'cared' for the people. When Hurricane Floyd hit over two years ago(of which many people are still struggling to get back to normal from) want to take one guess which 'caring' senator voted AGAINST his own constituents? Let me make it fair for you. It was the good Sen. Helms!!

Edwards has left his constituency behind and gone off to make a big name for himself for 2004. Dole will do the exact same thing. She is a RINO at best, just like her husband

Who Are the RINO's now Mr. Bears?

Is it people like Liddy Dole, who are moderate and mushy till it suits them not to be.. Or is it the Conservatives who hold their noses and vote for her?

If you flop, for Gawd's sake, use your brain in November and go with the lesser of two evils

And that kind of thinking is exactly what got this nation into the mess it has been in for way too long. The fact of the matter is that the public was never supposed to vote for Senators for the exact reason of what the Senators end up doing each and every day. Instead of getting to the business of the nation, they spend more time trying to turn public opinion to 'their' side to get 'their' guy in office. This nation has turned into exactly what the Founders did not want. A democracy.

And what should we do about it? Frankly nothing can be done about it without making decisions that would take away some of our decision making. Return to the business of our communities and our states. Let our state politicians decide who should be in the higher house. The 17th Amendment put the final nail in the coffin of the Republic. Everything else since then has just been dirt in the grave.

I'll agree. Anything to get the Senate back in control of Republicans. Don't think Liddy is all that bad. She is truly a Native North Carolinian. It is the same situation we have in S. C. with Lindsey Graham. I don't like his support of John McCain, but he IS runnin as a Republican. If another Mary Bono whispers in his ear, he will do the RIGHT thing.
