Sen. Helms May Endorse Liddy Dole This Week at CPAC
The National Journal and The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer ^ | Saturday January 26, 2001 | 'Weekend Scoop' Political Tip Sheet Staff

Posted on 01/26/2002 9:02:04 AM PST by umbra

Senator Jesse Helms (Republican-NC) 'has steadfastly avoided taking sides' in past GOP primaries, but he 'is about to bend his rule some--if not outright break it.'

Helms is scheduled to address CPAC on 1/31, and he 'has invited Elizabeth Dole to introduce him.'

Helms apparently plans to 'lavish her with praise.'

Helm's spokesman Jimmy Broughton 'wouldn't say whether Helms plans to endorse Dole, suggesting: 'Stay Tuned.'

One of Dole's GOP rivals, atty Jim Snyder,: "All this pomp and circumstance is to expected for someone who's been in Washington for so long.'

There's not a chance that as a senator, Dole would be a RINO of the Specter/Snowe/Collins variety.

No, she's going to be of a variety much worse. Giver her three weeks to two months top in Washington and she will have

1)be seen at a majority of Sen John 'Catch that Ambulance' Edwards press conferences giving 'bipartisan' support from everything including abortion and taking the guns out of the hands of the public
2)have her picture taken at least three times with Hitlery at one of her 'for the children' crusades and
3)call a RINO of the Specter/Snowe/Collins variety too conservative and not caring about the average American.

This woman is just using the Republican party as a way to get elected into office. Taking Jesse's seat is a cake walk and she won't even really have to campaign for it. It's being handed to her. She is a carpetbagger on a scale worse than Hillary IMO

You know there used to be a time in this nation's history when people were elected for their beliefs and not what party they belonged to.

Um, I don't think so. She may have some liberal tendencies at heart, but she's not stupid. She knows what she needs to do to stay in office and remain popular in NC. She may still swing leftward on guns, but I think that's probably the only major issue she'll do that on. That is of course unless she wants to go on some sort of one-term liberal suicide mission, which I suspect she doesn't.

"Liddy Dole is a gun grabbing, pro-abortion, RINO.
How can NC go from Jesse Helms to a RINO?"

Because her opponent will most likely be one of Satans henchmen (who will have all the demons Carville, McAuliffe, Lahane, Fabiani, Tamber et al at his disposal) and this seat is FAR TOO IMPORTANT to lose.

Jesse realizes this I just hope the rest of you start too realize it as well!

Everything you said about Dole is true but ALL and I repeat ALL the Rats will vote for Bowels if Republicans DON'T support the nominee (WHOEVER IT IS) the seat is as good as lost.

I don't know about the rest of you but I AM SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THE RATS REPRESENTING NC!

AND I WANT TO PUT A STOP TO IT IN NOV!

Liddy Dole is a control freak, who while as Secretary of Transport, forced all the states to raise the drinking age to 21, in order to receive federal highway funds.

She is on record as saying she believes the drinking age should be 25!

I don't support Democrats who believe in the nanny-state, and I certainly won't support Republicans who do.

By not voting, you just make things worse, I hope you know. You need to realize that not everybody feels the same way you do, and unless or until you get together with other people with likeminded views to actively boycott elections, all you're doing is making it easier to elect socialists and leftists who really do want to lessen our freedom. Just being Joe Schmoe who doesn't vote, a lone voice crying in the wilderness, doesn't do anything to advance your cause (which I adamantly disagree with, but I'm trying to be nice here).

The bottom line, however, is that your way of thinking is doomed to fail. I happen to think it's just a convenient excuse to be a victim, to blame problems on other people's action instead of your own inaction. It's easy to not vote. It's the lazy man's way, the convenient way. It's more challenging, more rewarding in the end to work for what you want. And you may as well realize that nobody gets everything they want in a democracy, when people of various backgrounds and beliefs have a vote that counts just as much as yours. Not voting doesn't count as work, or even a form of protest, unless you organize and actively recruit other people to boycott.

Patrick Henry wasn't a passive victim. Patrick Henry did something for this country. You're not doing anything, so don't insult the memory of Patrick Henry by identifying your cause with his.

RE:This woman is just using the Republican party as a way to get elected into office.

Just like her worthless husband, the guy who chose his party affiliation based on what would give him a better chance to get elected.
Real committed, there.

Liddy Dole is pro-life. She's said so on many occasions. That's all we have to judge her on that issue.

Liddy Dole Wins Support in Carolina

Elizabeth Dole has been quietly charming the voters in North Carolina and leads the pack to replace Jesse Helms next year in the U.S. Senate. And the Tarheel native is proving she's no Hillary Clinton carpetbagger.

At "events around the state, Mrs. Dole, 65, has been received like the celebrity she is, attracting outsized crowds in tiny towns," and she leads all polls, the New York Times reported.

One Republican opponent "has attacked Mrs. Dole on perceived shifts in her position on gun control, a critical issue to conservatives. While campaigning for president in 1999, Mrs. Dole opposed laws allowing people to carry concealed weapons and supported legislation to ban assault weapons," the Times said.

"Now facing a more conservative electorate, she wrote to the North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association pledging to 'oppose restrictions on the ownership of firearms that penalize the law-abiding citizen.' In the interview, she described herself as 'a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,' and said the assault weapons ban appeared to have had little effect on crime and should not be extended or expanded until studied further.

"She also said she would have 'no trouble supporting' North Carolina's concealed weapons law, which requires passing a gun safety test before being allowed to carry a concealed weapon and restricts where guns can be carried," the newspaper reported.

Steve Odom, the Republican sheriff of Graham County, said he was satisfied with her stand on the issues. "I don't know that the Republican Party could ever find someone to replace Jesse Helms, but Elizabeth is conservative enough for me."

She has maintained close ties to the state in the decades she has lived in Washington, and recently took title to the house in Salisbury where her 100-year-old mother lives.

"Of course, they tried to pack her off as another Hillary," Chester W. Crisp, the Republican chairman in Graham County, told the Times. "But she's not. She's a native North Carolinian, so she's our own flesh and blood."

Elizabeth Dole did say some things about gun control. Assault weapons should be banned, she argued, noting, correctly, that "you don't need an AK-47 to defend your family." Gun-show vendors should require a three-day waiting period for buyers. And "it's wrong," she declared, "to let people carry concealed weapons."

I'm with you. I am going to vote for Elizabeth Dole. (I knew Jesse would endorse her.) I'm going to vote to keep Jesse's seat Republican. I'm going to vote for the first woman senator from North Carolina. I'm going to vote for a woman who has a million times the qualifications, experience and principles of that woman senator of (not from) New York. I'm going to vote for a reliable vote for the Bush agenda in the U.S. Senate.
