Freeper Stun\Taser Gun Advice Required
na ^ | Moi

Posted on 01/25/2002 12:28:49 PM PST by ContentiousObjector

Okay Freepers, this is pretty straight forward, I need advice on a good stun gun or taser gun for my daughter.

My daughters school is going on a class trip to San Francisco in March… Any Questions?

Personally, I would like to send her with an M-16, Nerve Gas and Daisy Cutters, given the shear mass of human and sub-human garbage that calls San Francisco home, however that probably isn’t an option and my wife and I have concluded that a stun gun would probably be a reasonably good alternative… however I know absolutely nothing about stun guns. And down here no man with any self respect would walk into a gun store and ask for a stun gun

soooo, can any freepers recommend a good stun or taser gun?

So, she can lawfully carry a taser? (Seriously, I don't know; surely there are laws in CA for those things.)

Why can't she use a "regular" gun? Are they all illegal in California? (I wouldn't be surprised)

My advice?

Carry one illegally... Chances are that she'll never be searched and if she needs to use it who gives a damn if it's illegal!

As we say in Texas, "Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six!"

I'm not certain on tasers and stun guns, but they may be illegal under California law. Why not have give your daughter a good quality folding knife? They are legal under California law (a court decision within the last two years, as long as they are folded and carried as a tool instead of a weapon) and they are very useful. I would suggest a Cold Steel Voyager. I gave one to my daughter, and taught her a few good knife techniques just in case.

If a person *has* to use a knife to defend themselves, just remember that the same justifications apply as for any other use of deadly force. Knife or gun, it is the same.

A Taser is considered the same as a firearm in Kalifornia. Any kind of defensive weapon is illegal without a permit and they only give those to dem politicians and the Hollywood liberal gentry.

Isn't most of that stuff is outlawed in Kali? Hell, everything else is. I believe "MACE" is to? For pepper-spray try the stuff at counterassault.com or udap.com

Reading more carefully, since it is a "school" trip, if she has to go on school grounds, most schools now make it a punishable offense to carry even a pocket knife into the school, and the same, certainly, for tasers or stun guns.

Check out one called MYOTRON. I know a retired SS Agent who highly recommends it. He carries one along with his gun. His wife also carries one (and a gun).

This is not a good plan. Stun gun requires physical contact with perp. Taser, even if legal, only works about half time at best. How old, big is daughter? Either weapon requires she be able to deal physically with atacker if device does not produce desired result. You also have a serious legal problem with taking these things on school property, school bus etc.. Could get you and your daughter very jammed up.

How long is trip. Can you go? If you cannot go, why not get donations from group of parents to hire an off duty female LEO to go on trip?

PS, if you are worried about gays in SF, don't sweat them. They have their own problems.

My advice is, no matter what you get for her to carry, tell her not to call the local radio talk show host and brag about it on the air.

I'd recommend a knife as it has utility value a stun gun does not. If she has to use it no one will fault her for using her cheese cutter to defend against an agressor whereas a stun gun could be perceived to have offensive capapabilities. I think stun gun or knife would be preceived of as weapons and get almost any kid kicked out of high school.

Tween the stun gun and taser the stun gun is a better choice as the taser is a one shot deal and the stun will work as long as it is pressed against the perp's flesh.

Attitude and awareness should be her first weapon.

While I don't dabble with these things, I've seen a few.

Most models must be held against the assailant to be effective. I think the close proximity required greatly increases the chance of the user being injured, or even the stun gun being grabbed and used against the user.

The better models, IMO, are the ones that fire spring loaded fish hooks with wires attached from a distance. These hooks latch onto most anything and immediately discharge electricity to incapacitate the attacker. Downside is that each hook/wire can only be used once, however there are several (I think 5 or so) hook/wire units on the device.

The hook version is also more expensive. I'd also check The People's Democratic Republic of Kaliforniastan's laws about its legality.

Hope that helps.

re: Off duty female LEO.

A badge, even an out of state badge, gets help from the local badges in a hurry... and even an out of state LEO on "sanctioned duty" can carry legally.

If it's school trip, she will be on 'school property' at all times.

If your school or school district has a zero-tolerance policy, she could be suspended or expelled if found to be in possession of a weapon, such as nail clippers, scissors, butter knife, stun gun, .357 magnum, etc...

A stun gun requires the user to make physical contact with the target in order to work. I'm guessing that, 9 times out of 10, a smaller or weaker person that has not been extensively trained and practiced in the actual use of a stun gun will have it taken away from them and used against them.

A Taser fires a small dart, which connects from the unit via a wire. The dart must penetrate clothing in order to work. This also takes some practice. It is also not a guaranteed stopper. Rodney King was hit with a Taser twice, and he still got up for more. If the user does not succeed in disabling the assailant the first time, or misses/does not penetrate clothing, the device has a recharge time, during which said assailant is going to take it away from here and beat her over the head with it.

If you haven't guessed, I don't think either of these is a viable self defense weapon for an untrained person to rely upon. I would suggest that you get her a good 10% pepper spray, and several duplicate training devices, and let her practice with those. If she is willing to commit more time to learning to defend herself, then I suggest she enroll at a martial arts school which teaches Kubotan techniques (striking at vital points with a small concealable plastic baton) or Krav Maga (the Israeli Defense Force martial art, which focuses on a limited repertoire of proven disabling techniques, instead of a bunch of useless movie crap.)

Um, why don't you just have her stay home?

I'd recommend some kind OC or pepper spray. They are very concealable and effective. They can also be used at a distance unlike a stungun, where physical contact is required. Tasers may or may not be illegal in Kalifornica. Some incorporate an explosive propellant charge which the ATF and other state agencies categorize as a firearm equivalent.

There are several brands of pepper spray that are downright nasty to be on the receiving end of. Buy a couple different kinds and test them on unsuspecting anti-gun liberals. Pick the one that makes them wail the loudest.

Hope this helps. <8^)

I’ve heard that wasp and hornet spray works well. It shoots a nice powerful stream and is reasonably cheap.

I knew a guy once that would carry a handful of salt in his jacket pocket just in case he got in a scrap in the local bars. He did a lot of fighting in local bars, so I guess he was something of an expert on the subject.
