Well, the passengers are all ok. They have been de-planed, according to Fox. Icelandic TV is en route to the site.

It occurs to me that if they went to the US Naval Air Station they must have felt like it was a pretty serious threat.

Iceland's international airport is in the same place as the US Naval Air Station, so if they were doing an emergency landing in Iceland, they'd be going there anyhow.

Bet they're at Keflavik...plenty of military folk there to handle the situation.

Good. Let the perp go to the military brig for awhile. That'll lighten his ass up.

Sounds like a movie plot, was the bomb threat written in lipstick on the mirror?

Well now they're calling it a hoax:

Virgin flight to Florida makes emergency landing in Iceland following bomb threat, officials

1/19/02 1:27 PM

LONDON (AP) -- A trans-Atlantic passenger jet flying from Britain to Florida in the United States was diverted to Iceland Saturday after a bomb hoax, airline officials said.

The Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 took off from London's Gatwick airport at 6 a.m. EST bound for Orlando, Fla. It landed safely at Keflavik airport, 30 miles southwest of the capital Reykjavik at 12:26 p.m. EST.

An airline spokesman said a message containing a bomb threat had been found by crew in the plane's toilet. He said local police intended to question the passengers about the hoax threat.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority in Iceland said the plane, which had 322 passengers and 18 crew on board, landed safely. He said there had been a security threat, but had no further details.

Either way, this guy just gained lots of spare time. I'm sure the authorities will be giving this guy plenty of time to explain his actions. Hope he doesn't have to be anywhere soon. If he does, too bad.

You can create a lot of anarchy in the skies with hoaxes. It is a form of terrorism in and of itself. Nobody dies, but it slows everything down.

I don't see the purpose of a bomb threat. If you have a bomb, why tell anyone? It seems to me if you want to kill everyone you just do it, you don't talk about it. But if you don't have a bomb and want to terrorize people, you tell them that you do.

Is there any law to permanately ban these 'people' from flying again?

Interesting thought. I don't think that there is a law for this sort of thing. The airlines should keep these people in a database and prohibit them from flying that particular airline anymore. The airline may face civil rights accusations, but they can say, "Hey, this nut threatened to bring the plane down and caused an emergency landing. He's shown to be a clear and present danger."

As far as I'm concerned, anybody who pulls this sort of stunt should be jailed, sued for the downtime of the plane, and have to drive/take the bus to all their future destinations.

Well, if they had landed in Florida there are some pretty serious penalties for hoaxes regarding anthrax threats- presumably there are upgraded penalties for hoaxes like these, too.

Break out old Sparky...

Well, not that harsh... but if the mood strikes us we'll put prisoners in with Janet Reno. And then turn out the light.

Nah... you give them plenty of warning... You set the timer for a specific time, and then call the police to tell them about the bomb, but you lie and tell them a different time. The result is that you time the bomb's detonation with the arrival of the police... or shortly there after.

Alternativly, you could not call, detonate a bomb, and when emergency crews respond, detonate another one...

I read a lot...

was the bomb threat written in lipstick on the mirror?

According to the telephone interview of a policeman in Iceland by Fox News, yes.
